For the EPIK application, you only need to create and submit one English FAL lesson (equal to one class period). You should choose a conversation-based lesson, please avoid grammar-based lessons, number or alphabet/phonics focused lessons, and lessons focused on introducing yourself to the class.

Engaging Conversations

Lesson Overview

Grade: 7
Subject Area: English as a First Additional Language (FAL)
Duration: 60 minutes

Lesson Objectives

  1. Communication: Students will engage in meaningful conversations by expressing opinions and supporting them with reasons.
  2. Critical Thinking: Students will analyze and respond to different viewpoints in a conversation setting.
  3. Collaboration: Foster teamwork through pair and group discussions, enhancing collaborative skills.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed conversation scenario cards
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Audio recording devices (smartphones or tablets)
  • A ball or soft object for conversation prompts

Lesson Outline

Introduction (10 minutes)

Activity Title: Icebreaker - Agree or Disagree

  1. Objective: Warm up students and introduce the concept of expressing opinions.
  2. Instructions:
    • Arrange students in a circle.
    • State a simple statement related to current events or popular culture that is age-appropriate (e.g., "Home learning is better than school learning.").
    • Students who agree take one step into the circle; those who disagree step back.
    • Ask volunteers to briefly explain their position. Encourage short responses to hear more voices.

Main Activity (30 minutes)

Activity Title: Conversation Carousel

  1. Objective: Engage students in structured conversations using provided scenarios.
  2. Instructions:
    • Divide the class into pairs and distribute printed conversation scenario cards. Scenarios should be age-appropriate and promote discussion—e.g., planning a school event, or discussing a current social issue.
    • Each pair takes turns reading and responding to their scenario, playing roles.
    • Set a timer for 5 minutes for the first conversation, then ring a bell to signal the change to a new partner and scenario.
    • After switching partners three times, invite students to reconvene in their original pairs and share insights from their discussions.

Reflection and Sharing (15 minutes)

Activity Title: Stand and Deliver

  1. Objective: Reflect on conversations and share insights with the class.
  2. Instructions:
    • Students return to their initial partners.
    • Ask each pair to choose one conversation that was particularly engaging or insightful.
    • Have students take turns presenting this conversation to the class, highlighting new ideas or viewpoints.
    • Encourage students to ask questions and provide feedback on each presentation.

Closing (5 minutes)

Activity Title: Conversation Catch

  1. Objective: Reinforce learning and promote quick thinking.
  2. Instructions:
    • Stand in a circle and toss a ball to a student.
    • The student catches the ball and must state one thing they learned about conversation dynamics.
    • They then toss the ball to another student who shares something different they learned.

Assessment

  • Informal Observations: Monitor pair and group interactions to assess participation and language use.
  • Verbal Feedback: Provide feedback during presentations and group activities.
  • Reflection Contributions: Evaluate the depth of thought and engagement in the Stand and Deliver activity.

Differentiation

  • For Advanced Learners: Encourage them to incorporate more complex vocabulary and sentence structures during conversations.
  • For Struggling Learners: Pair them with supportive partners and provide sentence starters or prompts to aid participation.

Homework (Optional)

Encourage students to record themselves discussing one of the conversation topics with a family member or friend. Ask them to reflect on the differences in language use and responses between the classroom and home environments. This can be shared at the beginning of the next class for further discussion.
