- Estimate, measure, and compare the mass (weight) of familiar objects using standard units (grams and kilograms) and appropriate tools (scales or balances).
- Develop reasoning and relational thinking through estimation and comparison.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Understand the concept of mass/weight and recognise grams and kilograms as standard units.
- Practice making and refining estimates of weight using real-world objects.
- Use scales to measure and verify estimates.
- Develop critical thinking and numeracy skills through comparison and reflection.

Materials Required
- A variety of classroom and household objects (e.g., stapler, apple, water bottle, crayon box, tennis ball, small backpack, etc.)
- Digital and balance scales (2 each if available for rotation)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Personal Estimation Booklets (mini-booklet students will use to record predictions and reflections – teacher prepares ahead of time)
- “Estimation Weight Tags” – teacher-made laminated tags with grams/kilograms written on them for matching games
- Chart paper or digital projector to track group estimates and actual measurements
- Mystery Weight Box (see "Hook" activity)
Lesson Breakdown
1. Hook (10 minutes) – “Mystery Weight Box”
- Teacher brings a sealed, non-transparent box with a mystery object inside.
- Pass the box around. Students lift it, feel its weight, and write down their name and their estimate on the whiteboard.
- Teacher calls on 2-3 students to explain their reasoning — "What did it remind you of?" or “Why do you think it weighs 1kg?”
- At the end of the lesson, the box will be weighed together to reveal whether the estimates were close.
Tip: For added excitement, have 2 or 3 boxes with mystery objects of varying weights.
2. Concept Introduction (10 minutes) – What is Mass/Weight?
- Use visual anchor examples:
- “How much do you think a crayon box weighs? A bag of sugar? A pineapple?”
- Introduction to units of measurement used in Canada:
- Grams (g): Used to measure lighter objects.
- Kilograms (kg): Used to measure heavier objects.
- Demonstrate using a scale how 1000g = 1kg.
Use a visual anchor chart or image with side-by-side comparisons for grams and kilograms (e.g., “A paperclip = ~1g, A bottle of milk = ~1kg”).
3. Estimation Stations (30 minutes) – Weigh and Wonder
Rotation activity with 3 stations running simultaneously (10 minutes per rotation):
Divide the class into three groups of 4–5 students.
Station 1: Pick & Predict
- Students examine a set of objects and write down:
- Their estimation of the weight in grams or kilograms.
- A comparison sentence (e.g., "This marker is lighter than the apple.")
Station 2: Measure & Match
- Students use a digital or balance scale to weigh the same objects.
- They then match (using tags) the correct weight band:
- Light (0–500g),
- Medium (500g–1kg),
- Heavy (1kg+)
Station 3: Challenge Me!
- Teacher-led mini-quiz and discussion with a twist:
- Ask estimation questions such as:
- “Which is heavier: a pineapple or 7 apples?”
- “Two loaves of bread weigh 1kg. How much does each loaf weigh?”
- Use riddles and quick-fire games to encourage reasoning.
Rotate students every 10 minutes. Use a gentle chime to signal rotation.
4. Reflection and Debrief (7 minutes) – Did We Get It Right?
- Regroup as a class.
- Revisit the Mystery Weight Boxes.
- Open and measure the contents.
- Brief discussion: Were our estimates close? What clues helped?
- Class discussion:
- “What surprised you today?”
- “What will you think about next time you pick up something before guessing its weight?”
5. Wrap-Up and Exit Ticket (3 minutes) – Estimation Expert Cards
- Each student fills out a quick card with the following:
- One thing I learned today…
- The object I guessed most accurately was…
- The object that surprised me was…
Cards are placed in a “Measurement Magic Mailbox” for the teacher to review or use as a pre-assessment for the next lesson.
Differentiation Strategies
- Visual and tactile learners:
- Lots of hands-on manipulation of real-world objects.
- Language learners:
- Visual vocabulary cards available at each station.
- Students needing support:
- Work in guided pairs with sentence stems like “I think this is heavier than ___ because ___.”
- Those needing extension:
- Create their own estimation challenges for peers using a chosen object and write riddles.
Assessment Opportunities
- Informal observation during stations (look for use of correct units and comparative language).

Sneaky Homework Challenge (Optional)
"Weigh It and Wow Us!"
Students take home a simple estimation worksheet and are asked to:
- Pick 3 objects at home.
- Estimate each one’s weight.
- Ask an adult to help them measure using a kitchen scale if available.
- Bring one object (with adult permission) to class tomorrow to share their findings.
