Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Identify and name 12 animals in both English and Cree.
  2. Understand the habitats where these animals live.
  3. Explore Indigenous perspectives on the significance of these animals.
  4. Engage in movement, storytelling, and hands-on exploration to reinforce learning.

Materials Needed

✔ Flashcards with images of animals (one side English, one side Cree)
✔ Plush animal toys or figurines
✔ Recorded sounds of each animal
✔ Natural materials (twigs, leaves, cotton balls for snow, water trays)
✔ A large floor map or printed habitat scenes (forest, wetland, sky, etc.)
✔ Drum or shaker for transitions

Lesson Breakdown

1. Welcome Circle (5 Minutes)

  • Teacher uses a drum/shaker for a calming start.
  • Ask: "Have you ever seen a beaver, owl, or rabbit? Where were they?"
  • Briefly introduce that Indigenous peoples respect animals and see them as teachers.

2. Interactive Matching Game (10 Minutes)

  • Show each animal flashcard and name it in English first.
  • Repeat with the Cree word, encouraging students to mimic pronunciation.
  • Use animal sounds (recordings or teacher imitation) to engage students further.
  • Example: "This is a beaver! In Cree, it is amisk. Can you say amisk?"

3. Habitat Exploration (10 Minutes)

  • Lay out the floor map or habitat scenes (forest, water, sky).
  • Hand out plush animals or figurines and ask: "Where does your animal live?"
  • Encourage students to place the animal in its proper habitat and explain, e.g., “The muskrat (wacask) lives in the water.”
  • Use natural materials (twigs, leaves, water trays) for hands-on exploration.

4. Animal Movements & Storytelling (10 Minutes)

  • Call out an animal name in Cree, and have students act it out. (Example: Flap like a "mînîwak" (owl)!)
  • Share a short Indigenous story linked to an animal's meaning (e.g., Raven as a trickster, Beaver as a builder).
  • Ask guiding questions: “Why do you think the beaver is seen as a hard worker?”

5. Closing Reflection (5 Minutes)

  • Gather students and ask:
“Can you name an animal you learned today in Cree?”
“Why is it important to respect nature like Indigenous peoples do?”
  • End with a calm drum beat and thank students for learning.

Assessment & Differentiation

Observation: Note student participation, pronunciation, and ability to make habitat connections.
Gesture-Based Assessment: If students struggle with saying a word in Cree, they can act it out instead.
Support Strategies: Provide extra visual supports for students needing reinforcement.

Extensions & Next Steps

  • Take a nature walk to observe real animals or their habitats.
  • Make animal masks and role-play a story.
  • Learn a simple Cree song about animals.

This hands-on, movement-rich lesson ensures engagement while reinforcing Indigenous knowledge in a way that’s accessible for kindergarten learners.
