Exploring Numbers Creatively

Overview

• Rekenreks for each student
• Whiteboard and markers

• Poster with examples of numbers in everyday life (e.g., a clock, calendar, price tags)

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greetings & Agenda Overview:

   • Welcome students to their math adventure. Share an exciting day of exploring numbers and how we see them every day.

2. Whole Group Discussion:

   • Ask students where they see numbers in their lives. Examples might include calendar dates, shoe sizes, or counting toys.

3. Learning Target Introduction:

   • Explain that today they will explore and use numbers up to 50 with a special tool called the rekenrek.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Introduction to the Rekenrek:

   • Show the students a rekenrek and describe how it helps with counting and understanding numbers.
   • Demo creating the number 10. Slide one group of 5 beads, then another group of 5 beads on a row.

2. Number Representation:

   • Write the number 23 on the board. Ask students how they could show this number using their rekenrek.
   • Model the number, explaining each step: Slide 2 full rows of 5 and then 3 from another row.

3. Number in Everyday Use:

   • Show the poster with examples of numbers in everyday life and discuss each. Connect it back to what students will explore today.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

1. Hands-On Rekenrek Activity:

   • Give students their rekenreks and number cards. Ask them to practice making numbers 12, 34, and 27.
   • Move around the room to support students, correcting slide counts and asking probing questions to deepen understanding.

2. Pair Work:

   • Pair students and ask them to draw their representation of a favourite number under 50 on a shared chart paper using their rekenrek first.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Number Scavenger Hunt:
   • Pass out number cards (1-50) to pairs. Each pair finds something in the classroom connected to their number (e.g., 22 books on a shelf, 37 blocks).
   • Pairs share their findings with the class with emphasis on their connection to the number.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

1. Class Reflection:

   • Gather the students back together to sit in a circle. Reflect on the day’s learning and their experiences.
   • Ask them to share one thing they discovered about numbers.

2. Assessment:

   • Quick verbal quiz. Give an easy number and ask students how to show it on the rekenrek.
   • Check understanding and provide immediate feedback.

Extension Activity

• Number Stories:
  • As a take-home activity, ask students to illustrate a short story about their day using numbers up to 50. Encourage creativity where they use math in a fun way.

Differentiation

• For Struggling Students:

  • Work in small groups for direct guidance.
  • Use smaller numbers initially before working up to 50.

• For Advanced Students:

  • Create addition or subtraction stories using their number selection.
  • Use two rekenreks to explore numbers beyond 50.
