Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and name 2D shapes and 3D figures from their properties using appropriate vocabulary (e.g., faces, edges, vertices).
- Build and identify nets of simple 3D shapes (rectangular prism and cube).
- Develop spatial awareness by identifying shapes from drawings and models.
- Apply critical thinking and collaboration skills in a variety of learning stations.
Materials Needed
For the Whole Class
- Brief PowerPoint with visual aids (e.g., 2D shapes, 3D figures, nets)
- Small set of 2D and 3D shape manipulatives for explanation
Station Materials
Station 1 – 2D/3D Shape Bingo
- Printable/laminated bingo cards featuring 2D shapes (e.g., triangle, hexagon, trapezoid) and 3D shapes (e.g., sphere, cone, rectangular prism, pyramid)
- Calling cards for the teacher
Station 2 – 3D Shape Drawing
- Printable templates of 3D shapes (showing dotted guidelines for edges/faces to help students draw 3D representations)
- Pencils, erasers, and rulers
Station 3 – Building Nets
- Printable/cardstock nets for a cube and rectangular prism (pre-cut or to be cut by students, depending on readiness level)
- Scissors, glue sticks, tape, and markers
Lesson Outline
Part 1: Warm-Up and Overview (10 minutes)

Engage & Review
Start with a Guess the Shape activity to recap prior knowledge:
- Display individual images of 2D shapes and 3D figures on the PowerPoint. Students raise their hands to identify the shape and explain one property (e.g., “This is a pyramid because it has a square base and triangular faces”).

Purpose of Today’s Lesson
Briefly explain that today is a hands-on, activity-based session where they’ll rotate through three stations to explore shapes, draw them, and even build them from nets.
Part 2: Centre Rotation (50 minutes)
Divide the class (19 students) into 3 groups of approximately 6–7 students each. Students spend 15 minutes at each station, and the teacher signals when it’s time to rotate.
Station 1: 2D/3D Shape Bingo
Focus: Vocabulary & Identification
How it works:
- Students take a bingo card that contains various 2D shapes (like rhombus, pentagon) and 3D figures (like cone, cylinder). The teacher or a student helper calls out properties of a shape/figure instead of the name (e.g., “This shape has 3 sides” or “This figure has 1 circular face and no edges”).
- Students use counters to cover the correct shapes on their bingo card. If a student gets 3 in a row, they call out “bingo,” and the group reviews the answers together.
Teacher’s Role:
- Circulate to assess how students are engaging with the vocabulary and if they require support.
Station 2: 3D Shape Drawing
Focus: Understanding visual-spatial representation
How it works:
- Each student receives a dotted guideline printable of a 3D shape (e.g., cube, pyramid, sphere). Using rulers and pencils, they follow the dotted guides to draw the shape accurately.
- Challenge: Once they're done copying, they attempt a freehand version of the shape without the template.
Teacher’s Role:
- Assist students struggling with the perspective of 3D drawing and encourage effort over perfection.
Station 3: Building Nets
Focus: Spatial construction of 3D shapes
How it works:
- Students are given pre-cut or printable nets of a cube and rectangular prism. They fold the nets along the edges and assemble them into 3D shapes using glue or tape.
- Once assembled, they explore how the properties (e.g., faces, edges, vertices) match those of the 3D figure.
- Extension: Let students decorate their assembled shapes by labelling properties (e.g., “This is a face,” “This is an edge”).
Teacher’s Role:
- Demonstrate folding and assembling steps for any students who struggle and ensure materials are distributed evenly.
Part 3: Wrap-Up and Reflection (10 minutes)

Gather students back together and have a quick discussion about:
- Which station they enjoyed the most and why
- What they found challenging or learned that was new

Flash Quiz:
Using a PowerPoint slide, display 2D and 3D shapes one by one. Students vote with a thumbs up for 3D shapes and a thumbs down for 2D shapes. Encourage all students to justify their thumbs with reasoning (e.g., “It’s a 3D shape because it has depth”).
