Overview
This 10-minute mini-lesson is designed for Year 1 students, specifically tailored to support a child with dyscalculia in exploring addition and subtraction in a practical, visual, and tactile way. The activities emphasize hands-on learning and align with the California Common Core Standards for Mathematics for Grade 1, particularly:
- 1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems.
- 1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
This is an inclusive and differentiated lesson that uses manipulatives, visual cues, and fun while reinforcing a strong foundation in numeracy.

Materials Needed

Lesson Sequence
1. Warm-Up (2 minutes)
Topic: Counting Practice with Hands
- Begin by asking the student to wiggle their fingers. Play a quick counting game: “Show me 4 fingers. What if we add 1 more finger? Now, how many do you have?”
- Continue this with a few simple prompts, using fingers as physical manipulatives. For example: “Let’s subtract 2 fingers. How many now?”
- Build enthusiasm with positive reinforcement: “Great job! You’re amazing at counting!”
2. Direct Instruction (3 Minutes)
Focus: Visual and Tactile Addition/Subtraction

Model using counters and the number line to solve simple problems. For instance:
- Lay out 3 counters.
- Add 2 counters.
- “How many counters are here now? Let’s count them together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! That’s 3 + 2 = 5.”
