Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Begin the session by briefly discussing the importance of Remembrance Day in Canada, highlighting its significance in recognizing veterans and Indigenous contributions.
• Explain the importance of understanding vocabulary to discuss and reflect on such topics meaningfully.

Vocabulary Review and Sentence Creation (15 minutes)

1. Introduce Vocabulary:

   • Review each vocabulary word: Remembrance, Honour, Veteran, Sacrifice, Ceremony.
   • Use the whiteboard to display the first word: "Remembrance."

2. Sentence Creation:

   • Ask students to take out their ILA notebooks.
   • Say the first vocabulary word: "Remembrance."
   • Invite students to think about what the word means and ask them to raise their hands to create a sentence using the word.
   • Write a selected student's sentence on the board, e.g., "Remembrance Day helps us honour those who served."
   • Encourage students to write the sentence in their notebooks.
   • Repeat the process for the remaining words: Honour, Veteran, Sacrifice, Ceremony. Write each new sentence on the board and ask students to copy it into their notebooks.

Crossword Puzzle Activity (15 minutes)

• Distribute the crossword puzzle handouts featuring the vocabulary words.
