Integer Insights

Lesson Objective

Students will develop a thorough understanding of integers, including identifying, ordering, comparing, adding, and subtracting integers. This lesson will adhere to the Ontario Curriculum standards for Grade 7 Mathematics.

• Whiteboard markers
• Chart paper
• Printed integer test (one per student)
• Integers reference sheet

Lesson Duration: 50 minutes

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

• Begin with a quick review of integers, asking students:
  • What are integers?
  • Can someone provide an example of a positive and a negative integer?
• Write key points on the board.
• Explain the objectives of today’s class: mastering integer operations and preparing for a short test.

2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

• Identifying Integers:
  • Explain how to differentiate between positive and negative integers.
  • Use a number line for visual aid.
• Ordering and Comparing Integers:
  • Introduce how to determine which integer is larger or smaller using greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) symbols.
• Adding and Subtracting Integers:
  • Enhance understanding through 'zero pairs' and real-life contexts (e.g., temperature changes).
  • Example Strategy: Use multicolour counters for addition and subtraction demonstrations.

3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)

• Interactive Activity: “Integer Line-Up”
  • Have students form into groups of 4-5.
  • Each group receives integer flashcards.
  • Groups must arrange themselves in order according to the value of the integer cards they have.
  • Provide feedback and correct any misunderstandings.

4. Independent Practice and Assessment (15 minutes)

• Integer Test (25 marks)
  • Distribute the test to each student.
• Test Structure:
  1. Identify the Integer (5 marks):
     • Multiple-choice questions.
  2. Order and Compare (5 marks):
     • Arrange the given integers in ascending order.
  3. Find the Largest Integer (5 marks):
     • Identify the largest integer from sets provided.
  4. Add Integers (5 marks):
     • Solve simple addition problems with integers.
  5. Subtract Integers (5 marks):
     • Solve simple subtraction problems with integers.
• Collect tests and provide a five-minute silent period for students to work.

5. Closing and Review (5 minutes)

• Summarize key points covered in the lesson.
• Answer any lingering questions students have about integers.
• Announce that results from the test will be discussed in the next lesson and catch up with students who struggled.

Assessment

• The primary assessment method will be the 25-mark test administered during the lesson.
• Observe students during the "Integer Line-Up" activity for participation and understanding.

• Reflect on the test results to gauge individual and class understanding.
• Identify any common errors to address in subsequent lessons.
