Curriculum Expectations

Ontario Language Curriculum (Grade 1, English Language Arts)

  • 1.1.2: Demonstrate understanding of a variety of reading strategies and cues (visual, contextual, etc.) to read words and construct meaning from text.
  • 1.1.4: Recognize and read high-frequency words (sight words) in texts to enhance fluency.
• Oral Communication
  • 1.4.1: Use clear and precise language to express thoughts and ideas.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 10-minute lesson, students will be able to:

• Recognize and read 5 new sight words commonly used in Grade 1 texts.
• Understand the meaning and context of each sight word through targeted oral discussion.
• Demonstrate initial fluency in reading these sight words using visual and contextual cues.

Materials Needed

• Large colourful flashcards with the 5 selected sight words (e.g., the, and, is, to, you)
• A small whiteboard and marker
• Picture cards that illustrate simple sentences using the sight words
• Magnetic letters or letter tiles
• “Sight Word Detective” badges (printable or handmade) for engagement

Lesson Procedure

1. Activate Prior Knowledge (2 minutes)

• Gather students in a circle.
• Hold up a flashcard with a familiar sight word, for example, the. Ask, “Who has seen this word before?”
• Invite a few students to share where they have seen the word (books, signs, classroom labels).
• Briefly explain: “Sight words are words we see a lot and can read quickly without sounding them out.”

2. Visual and Contextual Introduction (4 minutes)

• Present each of the 5 sight words on flashcards one at a time, showing the word while saying it clearly.

• For each word, show a corresponding picture card or draw a simple sentence on the whiteboard using the word. For example:

  • “I can go.” (with a picture of a child walking)
  • “You like apples.” (with a picture of a child holding apples)

• Invite students to repeat the word aloud chorally and then individually.

3. Engagement Activity – Sight Word Detective (3 minutes)

• Give each student a “Sight Word Detective” badge to wear.
• Call out a sight word and have students “hunt” for the matching flashcard placed around the room.
• After finding the card, the student comes back and uses the word in a sentence orally or describes the picture related to it.
• Rotate quickly so all students have one turn.

4. Wrap-Up and Assessment (1 minute)

• Gather students back in the circle and quickly review the 5 sight words shown.
• Use the whiteboard to point at each word randomly and ask individual students to read it aloud.
• Praise all efforts, reinforcing confidence.

Assessment

• Observation during the “Sight Word Detective” activity for participation and word recognition.
• One-on-one questioning during wrap-up to check ability to identify and read sight words.
• Informal notes on which students may need additional sight word practice.

Differentiation

• For students needing additional support, pair them with a peer during the detective activity or provide tactile letters to handle and build the words.
• For more advanced students, encourage creating their own sentences orally using the sight words.

• Post-lesson, reflect on student engagement and accuracy in recognising sight words.
• Consider if additional multisensory resources (songs, apps) could enhance learning for students struggling with sight word retention.
