Objective

By the end of the lesson, 8th-grade students will be able to confidently add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed fractions, aligning with the California Department of Education Mathematics Standards.

Lesson Outline

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Warm-up Discussion:

   • Begin with a quick review of what fractions and mixed fractions are. Ask students to provide examples from everyday life where they encounter fractions (e.g., cooking, measuring, etc.).
   • Set the lesson's goal, explaining that they will become “Fraction Masters” able to tackle any problem involving fractions.

2. Direct Instruction:

   • Use visual aids like fraction circles to demonstrate the concept of adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators.
   • Recap the concept of multiplying and dividing fractions, emphasizing the need to convert mixed fractions to improper fractions when necessary.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

1. Hands-on Activity:

   • Distribute fraction circles or bars to pairs or small groups. Have them represent the addition and subtraction of fractions using the manipulatives.

2. Teacher-Led Examples:

   • Solve two problems on the board: one involving addition and subtraction, and another involving multiplication and division. Select problems that gradually increase in complexity.

Independent Practice (20 minutes)

1. Worksheet Challenge:

   • Hand out worksheets with a mix of fraction problems. Include a variety of problems: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, ensuring there's a mix of difficulty levels.

Game – Fraction Bingo (10 minutes)

1. Setup and Instructions:
   • Hand out "Fraction Bingo" cards. Each card contains a grid with different fraction problems.
   • Call out fraction operations such as “Add ( \frac{1}{3} ) and ( \frac{2}{3} )” or “Multiply ( \frac{3}{4} ) and ( \frac{1}{2} )”.
   • Students solve and mark their cards. The first to complete a row shouts “Bingo!” and explains their answers.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Review and Recap:

   • Quickly review key concepts covered in the lesson. Ask students to share any challenges they faced and discuss strategies for overcoming them.

2. Exit Ticket:

   • On a small slip of paper, students write one thing they learned about fractions today and any questions they might still have. Collect these at the door as students exit.

Extension Activity (Optional)

• Encourage students who finish early or need a challenge to use an interactive fraction app to solve more complex problems or create their fraction problems for peers to solve.
