Lesson Plan

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Engage: Begin with a fun question—ask, "If you had 500 candies, how could you show it differently?" Encourage students to brainstorm different ways to express the same number.
• Objective: Introduce the objective: Today, we will explore how to express numbers in various forms: expanded, picture, and standard.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

Writing Numbers in Standard, Expanded, and Picture Forms

• Standard Form: Present a three-digit number, e.g., 456. Write it on the whiteboard. Explain that this is how we normally write numbers.

• Expanded Form: Break down the number:

  • Show: ( 456 = 400 + 50 + 6 )
  • Explain each place value. Emphasize how the expanded form reflects the value of each digit.

• Picture Form:

  • Display base-ten blocks or images:
    • Draw: 4 hundreds, 5 tens, and 6 ones.
  • Demonstrate how these can be visualized as a representation of the number 456.

Group Activity (15 minutes)

Creating Number Posters

• Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of four.
  • Each group selects a number card (between 100 and 999).
  • Students use coloured pencils and paper to:
    • Write the number in standard form.
    • Break it down into expanded form.
    • Draw corresponding pictures with manipulatives.
  • Challenge them to be creative with their illustrations to make it vivid.

• Circulate: Walk around the class to provide support and encouragement.

Practice and Application (7 minutes)

• Worksheet Activity: Hand out worksheets with a mix of numbers to be converted into the different forms.
• Individual Task: Students work individually to complete as many as they can. They should target expressing five different numbers within the time.
• Quick Review: Go over one or two problems together to ensure understanding.

Closure (3 minutes)

• Sharing: Ask students to volunteer and share their number posters with the class, highlighting what they've learnt.
