Learning Objectives

1. Develop observational skills by closely examining and drawing an object.
2. Use different media (pencil and colors) to enhance visual representation.
3. Collaborate within a group setting and reflect on peer feedback.

Materials Needed

• Drawing paper (one per student)
• Pencils
• Coloured pencils, markers, or crayons
• A variety of simple objects (one per group) such as fruits, small toys, leaves, etc.
• Clipboards or drawing boards (optional for better mobility)

Classroom Setup

• Divide students into 7 groups of 4.
• Arrange tables with one object on each table.
• Ensure enough space for movement and observation around each table.

Lesson Plan

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Warm-up:
   • Greet students and warm up by asking if they have ever tried drawing from real-life objects.
2. Objective Overview:
   • Explain the purpose of observational drawing and its importance in capturing details.
   • Briefly introduce the materials and the process: first sketching with a pencil, then coloring.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

1. Grouping and Instructions (2 minutes):

   • Divide the class into 7 groups of 4 students each.
   • Assign each group to a table with an object on it.
   • Instruct students to observe the object closely for a minute.

2. Pencil Drawing (8 minutes):

   • Students start by sketching the object they see on their table using pencils.
   • Encourage capturing shapes, lines, and proportions as accurately as possible.

3. Adding Colors (10 minutes):

   • Once the pencil drawing is complete, students proceed to use colors to fill in their drawing.
   • Explain to students to pay attention to shading, texture, and colour variations.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Gallery Walk (3 minutes):

   • Students walk around to view each group's work, observing different interpretations and techniques.

2. Reflection and Feedback (2 minutes):

   • Each group takes turns sharing one thing they found challenging and one thing they are proud of in their drawing.
   • Teacher provides encouraging feedback and notes on excellently captured details.

Assessment

• Participation: Monitor participation in group activities and level of engagement in drawing.
• Artwork Review: Collect and quickly review drawings for understanding of observational skills and use of color.
• Reflection: Take note of comments during reflection to gauge self-assessment and peer feedback effectiveness.

Extensions (optional)

• Homework: Students select an object at home to practice and bring their observational drawing in the next class.
• Integration with Other Subjects: Link with science by drawing and labeling parts of a plant or explore cultural contexts in art through different cultural objects.

• Encourage students to maintain focus on detailed observation.
• Rotate objects if time permits to provide varied drawing experiences.
