Overview

This lesson plan is designed for Year 1-6 ESL students and focuses on the Visual Arts subject. Students will create expressive paper masks using minimal materials: paper, tape, colors, string, and sticker paper. This activity will help develop fine motor skills, creativity, and basic art vocabulary in English.

Materials

Preparation

1. Pre-cut a few mask templates as examples.
2. Prepare a vocabulary chart on the board with key terms: mask, color, tape, cut, stick, string, and decorate.
3. Set up a crafting station with all materials accessible.

Lesson Breakdown

Introduction (15 minutes)

1. Greeting and Attendance

   • Greet the students and take attendance.

2. Introduction to the Project

   • Briefly explain that they will be making their own paper masks.
   • Show a finished mask as an example.
   • Go over the vocabulary chart and practice pronunciation as a group.

Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Explain the Steps

   • Show the steps to create a mask:
     1. Choose a piece of construction paper.
     2. Fold it in half to create symmetry.
     3. Draw half of the mask shape.
     4. Cut along the drawn line.
     5. Unfold to reveal the mask shape.
     6. Decorate using colored pencils, markers, and sticker paper.
     7. Use tape to add string for securing the mask.

   • Demonstrate each step clearly while students watch.
   • Ask questions to check comprehension and correct pronunciation.

Craft Activity (50 minutes)

1. Mask Creation

   • Distribute materials.
   • Walk around to assist students individually.

Exhibition (10 minutes)

1. Display Completed Masks

Conclusion (10 minutes)
