Pattern Detectives

Objective

Students will identify, create, and extend both numerical and non-numerical patterns.

• Large chart paper
• Markers
• Pattern blocks

Plan

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Warm-Up Activity: Start with a quick warm-up on the interactive whiteboard.
   • Display a simple pattern (e.g., red, blue, red, blue).
   • Ask students, "What comes next?" and have them come up and touch the next colour or number.
   • Repeat with a numerical pattern (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8).

Mini-Lesson (10 minutes)

1. Introduce Numerical Patterns:
   • Show a number sequence and ask students what they notice (e.g., 5, 10, 15, 20).
   • Discuss the rule of adding 5 each time.
2. Introduce Non-Numerical Patterns:
   • Display a pattern with shapes (e.g., circle, square, circle, square).
   • Discuss what the students observe and how the sequence repeats.
3. Key Vocabulary:
   • Pattern, sequence, repeat, numerical (numérique), non-numerical (non-numerique).

Hands-On Activities (15 minutes)

1. Group Activity – Numerical Patterns:
   • Divide the class into small groups (4-5 students each).
   • Give each group a set of number cards and chart paper.
   • Have them create and extend a numerical pattern. Each group presents their pattern to the class.
2. Group Activity – Non-Numerical Patterns:
   • Use pattern blocks and colour tiles for students to create non-numerical patterns on their tables.
   • Ask each group to walk around the room and observe other groups' patterns.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

1. Worksheet Task:
   • Provide a worksheet with a mix of numerical and non-numerical patterns to complete.
   • Encourage students to identify the rule and extend the patterns.

Review and Reflect (5 minutes)

1. Class Discussion:
   • Come together as a class and discuss what they learned.
   • Ask questions like "What was the most interesting pattern you saw today?" and "How can you use patterns in real life?"

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Exit Ticket:
   • Have students write down one pattern rule they created today and drop it in the "Pattern Detectives" box before leaving.
   • This helps assess individual understanding and prepares them for the next lesson.

Differentiation

1. For Advanced Students:
   • Challenge them with more complex patterns (e.g., arithmetic and geometric sequences).
2. For Struggling Students:
   • Provide additional support with simpler patterns and one-on-one guidance.
