Overall Expectation:
- E1: Estimating and Measuring – Estimate, measure, and record quantities using standard units.
- E2: Comparing, Ordering, and Representing Measurements – Compare, describe, and order objects, using measurable attributes.
Learning Intentions
Students will:
- Identify and discuss real-life scenarios where measurement is essential.
- Practise selecting appropriate units and tools for common measurement scenarios.
- Apply knowledge of conversions (e.g., cm to m, g to kg) to solve simple problems.
Success Criteria
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Recognise real-world situations where measurement is necessary.
- Select suitable tools and units for different measurement contexts.
- Confidently convert between units of measurement (e.g., centimetres/metres).
- Explain their reasoning for choosing specific measurement strategies.
Materials Required
- Measuring tools (rulers, metre sticks, measuring tape, scales)
- Pre-prepared "Real-life Scenario" task cards
- Whiteboard and markers
- Student Worksheets (Measurement Scenario Chart)
- Clipboards
- Stopwatch or timer
- Images of real-world contexts (e.g., recipe photos, sports fields, furniture layouts)
Activating Prior Knowledge (10 minutes)
Activity: “Would You Measure It?” Game
- Teacher presents 5 flash images on the whiteboard (e.g., a watermelon, a swimming pool, a shoelace, a sandwich, a cat).
- For each image, ask:
- “Would you measure the length, mass, or capacity here?”
- “Which unit and tool would you use?”
- Students vote by holding up corresponding signs: L (length), M (mass), C (capacity).
🔍 Purpose: Familiarise students with measurement domains through engaging, age-appropriate visuals.
Direct Teaching (10 minutes)
Mini-Lesson: Connecting Measurement to the Real World
- Share a short story: “Olivia and the Big Move” — a girl helping her family move house and having to measure furniture, grocery shopping by weight, and fill moving boxes.
- Break down real examples in the story:
- Measuring furniture to fit through a doorway (length – metres)
- Lifting boxes marked by total weight (mass – kilograms)
- Making a smoothie with exact amounts of milk and juice (capacity – millilitres/litres)
- Teacher models how to:
- Choose the correct unit
- Estimate the measurement
- Use a ruler, scale, or measuring cup
🎯 Focus: Develop conceptual understanding of the practical use of measurement.
Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Activity: Real-Life Measurement Stations
Students rotate through 3 stations, working in partners:

Station 1: Let’s Move a Couch!
- Students measure the classroom doorway.
- Given toy furniture dimensions, decide which can “fit through”.
- Record decision with drawing and measurement justification.

Station 2: Ripe for Sale!
- Using scales, students weigh different fruit items.
- Estimation first, then actual weighing.
- Convert from grams to kilograms, record both.

Station 3: Smoothie Time!
- Students measure liquids using measuring cups.
- Follow a mini recipe and adjust volume (e.g., double or halve recipe).
Each station includes a mini-challenge card (e.g., “Make a smoothie for your pet dragon using half the recipe!”) to encourage creative thinking.

Independent Practice (15 minutes)
Task: Solve That Scenario!
Hand out individual scenario cards (differentiated):
Examples:
- “You’re packing a gift box for your cousin. The toy is 48cm wide; the box is 50cm. Will it fit?”
- “You’re helping bake cookies. The recipe says 250mL of milk, but your jug only has litre markings. How much is that?”
- “Your sports field is 80m long. You need to mark halfway for a game. What measurement is halfway?”
Students complete their worksheet by:
- Identifying the right measurement type
- Choosing an appropriate unit/tool
- Showing conversion (if needed)
- Explaining their reasoning in a sentence
🎯 Emphasis on applying knowledge to slightly unfamiliar but age-appropriate, realistic scenarios.
Consolidation and Discussion (5 minutes)
Activity: Measurement Reflection Circle
Students sit in a circle and reflect using the sentence starter:
- “Today, I learned I can use measurement when I…”
As students share, teacher connects ideas back to the real world, capturing key examples on the whiteboard (e.g., grocery shopping, furniture moving, recipe following).

Differentiation
- Support: Peer pairing, vocabulary helper cards (mass, length, capacity), real items for tactile learners.
- Extension: Extra card challenge (“Design a small treehouse using at least 2 different measurement types”).
- ELL Support: Picture dictionaries for measurement vocabulary, gesture-rich instruction.

Formative Observation:
- Participation and accuracy during stations
- Use of correct units and tools
- Verbal reasoning during reflection circle
Work Sample:
- Completed scenario cards will be collected and assessed using a rubric aligned with the expectations.

Home Connection
Send students home with a "Measurement in My Kitchen" scavenger sheet:
- Find 3 objects and list:
- What type of measurement is needed
- What unit/tool would be used
- Estimate the measurement
This prepares students for Lesson 16 “Measuring at Home” with their family.
Teacher Reflection
After the lesson, consider:
- Did students confidently apply conversions in context?
- Were they able to articulate reasoning for selecting tools and units?
