Lesson Overview
This engaging 45-minute lesson introduces Year 1 students to 2D and 3D shapes following the British Columbia Mathematics curriculum standards. Through hands-on activities and a blend of inquiry and exploration, students will identify, differentiate, and describe shapes, laying foundational skills for spatial reasoning and geometry. The goal of the lesson is to focus on recognising shapes in the environment while practicing proper math vocabulary as per grade-level expectations.

Learning Outcome:
From the British Columbia Grade 1 Curriculum, students will:
- Recognize 2D shapes (circles, triangles, squares, rectangles) and 3D objects (spheres, cones, cylinders, cubes) in their environment.
- Sort and classify shapes based on their attributes, such as number of sides or vertices (for 2D shapes) and presence of flat or curved surfaces (for 3D shapes).
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and name common 2D shapes and 3D objects.
- Describe key properties of shapes (e.g., "This is a square; it has four equal sides.").
- Compare and sort shapes based on their features.
- Build connections between shapes found indoors or outdoors and math concepts.
Materials Needed
- Sets of wooden or plastic 2D and 3D shapes (one per group).
- Large chart paper with pre-drawn columns for 2D Shapes and 3D Shapes.
- Whiteboard or large screen for shared learning (optional magnetic shapes if available).
- A mystery "feely bag" containing small 2D or 3D objects. Examples: toy ball (sphere), soup can (cylinder), cardboard square, etc.
- Printable Shape Scavenger Hunt worksheet (one per student).
- Glue sticks, crayons, scissors.
Lesson Breakdown (45 Minutes)
1. Warm-Up (10 Minutes)
Introduction: Hook
- Begin by holding up an everyday object (e.g., a cereal box or a basketball). Ask: “What is this shape?” “What do you notice about it?”
- Facilitate a brief conversation about how objects around us can be grouped into 2D or 3D categories. Challenge the students by asking: “What’s the difference between a 2D and 3D shape?” Record a few ideas on the board.
Shape Song
- Play or lead students through a fun shape song tailored for kids with verses for both 2D and 3D shapes. This reinforces vocabulary like "circle," "cylinder," "sphere," etc., and warms them up for identification exercises.
2. Exploring Shapes (15 Minutes)
Activity 1: Sorting Game (Teacher-Led Discussion)
- Organise students into small groups of 4 (6 groups total).
- Hand each group a mixed set of 2D shapes (e.g., triangle, square, rectangle) and 3D shapes (e.g., cube, cone, sphere).
- On chart paper, draw two large sections: 2D Shapes and 3D Shapes. Ask students to come up and place their shapes in the correct category.
- Ask guiding questions to deepen understanding: "What makes this shape 2D? How do you know this shape is 3D?”
- Optional Extension: Introduce key terms like face, vertices, and edges for more advanced learners.
Activity 2: Feely Bag Challenge
- Bring out the "Feely Bag" containing objects like a toy ball, cube, cone, etc.
- Each student takes a turn feeling an object inside the bag without looking. After feeling, they describe it to the class: "I think it’s round and has no sides—it must be a sphere!”
- Encourage critical thinking by asking: “Could it be something else? Why or why not?”
3. Shape Scavenger Hunt (15 Minutes)
Objective: Linking classroom learning to real-world observation.
- Distribute the Shape Scavenger Hunt worksheet to each child. The worksheet includes spaces to record (or draw) objects they find that resemble:
- 2D Shapes: Start with examples like windows (rectangle) or a clock face (circle).
- 3D Shapes: Include examples like cans (cylinders) or basketballs (spheres).
- Students will walk around the classroom or nearby hallway to spot examples of these shapes in their environment and record their findings.
- For younger learners still working on fine motor skills, provide glue sticks so they can stick printed pictures or cut-outs of the shapes they find.
4. Conclusion and Reflection (5 Minutes)
- Gather students back to the group and ask them to share one 2D and one 3D shape they found during the Scavenger Hunt.
- Use the whiteboard to tally examples of the most commonly found shapes to show trends (e.g., “Wow, lots of us found circles and cylinders!”).
- Wrap up with a “Shape Detective” Certificate for each student to celebrate their learning and inspire confidence.
Differentiation
- For advanced learners: Introduce complex vocabulary like "edges," "vertices," and "faces" during the Feely Bag activity. Encourage them to count and classify shapes based on these properties.
- For students needing extra support: Pair them with more confident learners or provide templates with pre-labelled shapes to assist with identification during activities.
