Teaching Instructions

I want the lesson to have a soccer skills test for passing and dribbling

Soccer Skills Assessment

Curriculum Area: Physical Education (Grade 6) – California State Standards

Standard Addressed:

  • Standard 1: Demonstrate motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Standard 2: Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
  • Standard 5: Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, including motivation and teamwork, to facilitate performance in physical activity.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Perform controlled dribbling while maneuvering through obstacles.
  2. Accurately pass a soccer ball to partners over short and medium distances.
  3. Demonstrate teamwork and communication during skill-based activities.
  4. Self-assess their skill development and set personal improvement goals.

Equipment Needed

  • 15 soccer balls (one for every pair of students)
  • 30 cones (for dribbling course)
  • 4 small goals or markers for passing targets
  • 2 stopwatches (if available, can use teacher’s phone for time tracking)

Lesson Structure (30 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up (5 Minutes)

Activity: ‘Tic-Tac-Toe Dribble’

  • Set up a tic-tac-toe grid with nine cones in a 3x3 format.
  • Split students into two teams.
  • One student at a time dribbles the ball to a cone and places a coloured marker before running back and tagging the next player.
  • First team to form a line of three wins.
  • This fun warm-up reinforces dribbling control and spatial awareness.

2. Dribbling Skills Test (10 Minutes)

Activity: ‘Dribble Gauntlet’

  • Set up a slalom course with cones 1.5 meters apart, extending 15 meters.
  • Students take turns weaving through the course while being timed.
  • Emphasis on:
    • Using inside and outside of the foot for control
    • Keeping the ball close and looking up periodically
  • Scoring:
    • 3 points for completing the course under 15 seconds (controlled dribble)
    • 2 points for 16-20 seconds
    • 1 point for over 20 seconds
    • -1 point for every cone missed or loss of ball control
  • After two attempts, students record their best score and share one self-improvement target.

3. Passing Skills Test (10 Minutes)

Activity: ‘Target Passing Challenge’

  • Students pair up and pass the soccer ball between them at three increasing distances:
    • Short (5 meters)
    • Medium (10 meters)
    • Long (15 meters, if skills allow)
  • Each pair aims to hit a small goal or designated target area with controlled passes.
  • Scoring:
    • 2 points for successful short-distance pass, 3 for medium, 4 for long
    • -1 point for loss of control or inaccurate passes
  • After five rounds, students reflect with their partner on their best technique and an area for growth.

4. Cool Down & Reflection (5 Minutes)

Activity: ‘Soccer Talk Walk’

  • Students walk in pairs around the playing area while discussing:
    • Their strongest skill today
    • One area they want to improve
    • How communication helped in passing activities
  • Whole class shares a few reflections before moving inside.

Assessment / Reflection

  • Self-Assessment: Students record their dribbling and passing scores in a personal log and set one skill improvement goal.
  • Teacher Observation: Monitor ball control, accuracy, and teamwork during the session.
  • Verbal Exit Ticket: Ask one or two students to share what helped improve their passing/dribbling.

Differentiation Strategies

  • For Advanced Students: Introduce weaker-foot dribbling or one-touch passing drills.
  • For Struggling Students: Reduce the dribbling course length or simplify passing targets by using larger gates.
  • Inclusive Approach: Ensure students with mobility challenges participate by adapting activities using rolling or controlled bouncing passes instead of foot-based control.

Extension / Homework

Encourage students to practice at home by setting up small dribbling cone courses or practicing passes against a wall. They can record their times/progress and share in the next PE lesson.

This structured yet engaging lesson ensures an active learning environment while aligning directly with California Physical Education standards.
