Overview

This lesson plan aims to enhance the speaking skills of 8th-grade students, aligning with California's Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Specifically, we'll focus on standard SL.8.1, which addresses engaging effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, and SL.8.4, presenting claims and findings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Engage in thoughtful discussions and express their ideas clearly.
2. Present information, findings, and supporting evidence concisely and logically.
3. Use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation during presentations.

Lesson Structure

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Objectives: Welcome students and introduce the learning objectives. Emphasize the importance of good speaking skills in everyday life and various careers.
2. Engagement Activity: Ask students why they think speaking skills are important. Allow a few students to share their thoughts.

Activity 1: Think-Pair-Share (10 minutes)

1. Instructions: Explain the "Think-Pair-Share" strategy. Students will think individually about a given prompt, pair with a partner to discuss, and share with the class.
2. Prompt: “Describe your favourite hobby or interest and why it is important to you.”
3. Execution: Give students 2 minutes to think and jot down ideas, 4 minutes to discuss with their partner, and finally 4 minutes to share standout points with the class.

Activity 2: Impromptu Speaking (15 minutes)

1. Set-Up: Write a variety of topics on index cards (e.g., "The Future of Technology", "My Role Model", "A Memorable Day", "If I Were a Teacher").
2. Instructions: Explain the impromptu speaking exercise. Each student will pick a card and have 1 minute to prepare and 1 minute to speak.
3. Execution: Allow students to volunteer or select them randomly. Use the timer to keep track of preparation and speaking time.

Wrap-Up and Reflection (5 minutes)

1. Reflection Prompt: Ask students how they felt during the speaking activities and what they learned about their speaking skills.
2. Class Discussion: Engage the class in reflecting on the different speaking techniques they observed in their peers, such as clarity, volume, and body language.
3. Closing Remarks: Highlight the value of practicing speaking skills regularly and encourage students to continue honing these skills outside the classroom.
