This lesson aims to provide Year 7 students with a review of decimal notation and place value, helping them connect decimal concepts to real-world scenarios. It prepares students for later lessons on dividing decimals. Lessons are designed to build curiosity and maximise engagement.
Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and explain decimal place values (tenths, hundredths, thousandths).
- Relate decimals to real-world contexts (e.g., money, measurements).
- Compare and order decimals correctly.
- Build confidence in working with decimals as a foundation for future division tasks.
Resources Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Individual student mini whiteboards and pens
- Cut-out decimal cards (pre-made with a variety of decimal numbers to the thousandths place)
- Activity sheets (provided in the class pack)
- A large analogue clock (or a visual image of one) for applied learning
- Visualiser/document camera for peer-sharing work
- A set of "decimal dice" (large dice marked with decimal values such as 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, etc.)
- Objects labelled with measurements (e.g., juice box labelled 0.5L, cereal box labelled 1.25kg)
Lesson Structure (60 Minutes)
1. Starter Activity: Decimal Spotting in Real Life (8 Minutes)
Objective: Introduce relevance of decimals to everyday life.
- Task:
Begin the lesson by displaying images of everyday objects where decimals are used, such as price tags (£2.75), petrol prices (155.9p/L), and digital clocks (12.50pm). Ask students to write down other examples of decimals they’ve seen recently.
- Think-Pair-Share:
Students discuss their examples in pairs before sharing a few of their ideas with the class. Record student contributions on the board.
- Teaching Prompt:
Emphasise that decimals are everywhere in their daily lives and build on their use for precision (money, weight, time).
2. Introduction to Decimal Place Values (12 Minutes)
Objective: Review the concept of place value in decimal numbers.
- Recap:
Display a large number with decimals on the board, e.g., 345.678. Use questioning to review each place value, starting with the whole number (units, tens, hundreds) and moving through tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
- Interactive Demonstration:
Use cut-out decimal place value grids (or draw one on the board) to visually highlight how each movement to the right divides the value by 10.
- Quick Quiz:
Read out numbers (e.g., 3.2, 45.123) and ask a few students to identify specific place values, such as the number in the hundredths place or tenths place.
3. Group Activity: Decimal Comparisons (15 Minutes)
Objective: Build fluency in comparing and ordering decimals.
- Activity Setup:
Distribute prepared decimal cards (e.g., 0.457, 1.23, 0.083) to pairs of students. The task is to organise the cards in ascending order within their pairs.
- Class Challenge:
After pairs have practised, select 5 cards from different pairs and invite the class to collaboratively order them correctly on the board.
- Extension for Fast Finishers:
Students create their own decimal comparison problem for others to solve.
4. Applied Learning: Everyday Decimal Contexts (10 Minutes)
Objective: Strengthen understanding by applying decimal concepts.

Scenario 1—Money:
Ask: “If you had £12.57 and spent £7.65, how much would you have left?” Guide the class through the reasoning, asking questions about which place values they are subtracting and why. Students write their answers on mini whiteboards for peer feedback.

Scenario 2—Measurements:
Display a juice box labelled 0.5L and a water bottle labelled 1.25L. Ask: “What’s the difference between these two volumes?” Encourage students to connect their knowledge of subtraction with place values.

Use the analogue clock to demonstrate time-related decimals, e.g., 0.25 for 15 minutes and 0.5 for 30 minutes.
5. Independent Task: Decimal Ladder Race (10 Minutes)
Objective: Foster independent work skills while reviewing learning.
- Task:
Hand out activity sheets featuring a “Decimal Ladder” game. Students solve progressively harder problems involving decimal place value, comparison, and ordering. Each correct answer allows them to “move up the ladder.”
- Goal:
Clear as many levels as possible in 8 minutes. Top three scorers earn a small reward (stickers or commendation points).
6. Plenary/Wrap-Up (5 Minutes)
Objective: Reinforce key learning and reflect on progress.

Pose rapid-fire place value and comparison questions to the class. Call on random students to answer. For example:
- “Which place value is the 4 in 12.345?”
- “Which is greater: 0.78 or 0.087?”

Differentiation Strategies
- For Lower-Ability Students: Provide simplified decimal cards (e.g., values only up to hundredths place) and offer worked examples during the “Decimal Comparisons” activity. Pair them with supportive peers.
- For Higher-Ability Students: Encourage exploration of reasoning problems, such as why 0.9 and 0.90 represent the same value. Allow them to design their own complex decimals for others to order or compare.
- Visual Learners: Use highly visual tools like the analogue clock and diagrams that make decimals as tangible and relatable as possible.
Homework
Task Title: "Decimals in My Day"
Description: Students record 5 instances where they encounter decimals in everyday life (e.g., shopping receipts, cooking measurements, transport schedules). They write a brief paragraph explaining how decimals were important in each context.
