Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Understand the place value of digits in a four-digit number.
2. Represent numbers up to 10,000 using base-ten blocks and other materials.
3. Compare and order numbers up to 10,000.

Materials Needed

Lesson Breakdown

Introduction (10 minutes)

• Begin with a brief review of place value up to the hundreds, revisiting prior knowledge from Grade 3.
• Introduce the concept of four-digit numbers extending up to 10,000.
• Use the whiteboard to visually display a large number, e.g., 5,672. Discuss the value of each digit in terms of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

Hands-On Activity (15 minutes)

• Distribute base-ten blocks to each group of students.
• Give each group a set of number cards.
• Ask students to form a four-digit number using the number cards.
• Have students model the formed number using base-ten blocks, representing thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
• Encourage groups to exchange models and verify each other’s numbers, focusing on the place value of each digit.

Demonstration and Practice (15 minutes)

• Demonstrate using the projector or whiteboard how to compare two four-digit numbers. Use place value charts to emphasize the importance of each digit's position.
• Provide practice exercises where students compare pairs of four-digit numbers using greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=) symbols.
• Have students use sticky notes to write and order a series of numbers on their desks, reviewing with peers to ensure accuracy.

Independent Practice (15 minutes)

• Hand out exercise sheets where students solve place value riddles, fill in missing digits, and order lists of numbers from least to greatest.
• Offer personalized feedback as students work, and provide hints to those struggling with the concept.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

• Facilitate a class discussion to review key concepts learned about place value.
• Use guided questions:
  • "What happens to the value of a digit as it moves from left to right?"
  • "How can we use place value to compare two numbers?"
• Summarize learning points and highlight any common misconceptions observed.

Assessment

• Collect exercise sheets to assess individual understanding of place value concepts.
