Objective:

Students will enhance their understanding of weather phenomena and improve their skills in reading comprehension and descriptive writing. They will critically analyze an informational text about weather and craft a short descriptive paragraph about a weather event.

Duration:

2 minutes

Materials Needed:

• A short informational text on weather (preferably about a specific weather phenomenon such as thunderstorms or snowstorms)
• Whiteboard and markers
• Student notebooks and pens

Lesson Plan:

Introduction (30 seconds)

1. Greeting and Objective Overview (10 seconds)

   • "Good morning, class! Today, we're going to dive into the fascinating world of weather. Our goal is to read about a weather phenomenon and write a descriptive paragraph about it."

2. Quick Discussion (20 seconds)

   • Ask, "What comes to mind when you think of weather?"
   • Quickly capture a few student responses on the whiteboard (e.g., rain, sunshine, thunderstorm).

Reading Activity (45 seconds)

1. Introduction to the Text (5 seconds)

   • "We're going to read a brief excerpt about thunderstorms. Pay close attention to the descriptive words used."

2. Silent Reading (20 seconds)

   • Distribute the excerpt or display it on the whiteboard.
   • Students read the text silently.

3. Comprehension Check (20 seconds)

   • "What are two things you learned about thunderstorms from this text?"
   • Quickly call on 2-3 students for responses.

Writing Activity (45 seconds)

1. Descriptive Writing Prompt (10 seconds)

   • "Now, using what you've learned, write one descriptive paragraph about a thunderstorm. Use vivid imagery and sensory details."

2. Independent Writing (35 seconds)

   • Students write their paragraphs in their notebooks.

Conclusion (30 seconds)

1. Share and Wrap-Up (30 seconds)
   • Ask a few students to quickly share a sentence from their paragraphs.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed on their ability to identify key information from the text and their use of descriptive language in their writing.

Extension (Optional):

For homework, students can expand their paragraphs into a full-page descriptive essay about their favourite weather phenomenon.
