Mystery Bag Challenge:
Place 3 sealed cloth bags at the front of the class. Ask:

“Which of these do you think weighs the most?”
“Which one is lightest? Why do you think so?”

Let students pass the bags around and briefly handle them (no peeking inside!)
Emphasise the idea of mass being how “heavy” or “light” something is, rather than just how big it appears.

Introduce the terms grams and kilograms using friendly visuals:

  • Grams = small weights (e.g., 1 paperclip ≈ 1g)
  • Kilograms = larger weights (e.g., 1 textbook ≈ 1kg)

🛠️ Mini-Lesson & Modelling (15 Minutes)

Teacher Demonstration:

  • Show 1 paperclip, a small packet of beads, and a litre of water.
  • Weigh them on the scale and point out the unit showing on the digital screen (“g” vs “kg”).
  • Write down and describe each result clearly on the board.

Discuss how we use grams and kilograms in cooking, sports, and shopping:

“How do we know how much a watermelon weighs at the supermarket?”
