Cress Growth Observation Log

Grow cress seeds on damp cotton wool or paper towel. Keep them in a safe place with light and warmth. Add a little water when the growing material starts to dry, but do not flood it. Record what you actually observe on Days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14. Measure from the growing surface to the tallest shoot. Wash your hands after handling seeds or plants. Never taste the cress.

Observe and record

Use one row each time you observe. Write the date, measure the tallest shoot in centimetres, and note visible changes. If no shoot has appeared yet, record 0 cm and describe what you see.

Make sense of your observations

Use your own measurements and notes to answer. Answers will depend on your cress investigation.

1.Which observation day was the first time you saw a root or shoot? If you did not see one, what might you check before the next observation?
2.Which observation day was the first time you saw green leaves? If leaves did not appear, write “not yet”.
3.What changed first in your cress: roots, shoots, leaves, or height? Use one detail from your log as evidence.
4.Find the difference between the Day 1 height and the Day 14 height. Show your subtraction and include cm.
5.True or false: A seed can begin to sprout when it gets water, even before green leaves appear.
TrueFalse
6.Choose the best description of a fair comparison if you were testing whether light affects cress growth.
  • Grow two groups with the same seeds, water and warmth, but give them different amounts of light.
  • Give one group more water, more warmth and more light.
  • Use different kinds of seeds and put both groups in the dark.
7.Which conditions did you provide for your cress? Tick or name water, light, warmth and air. Which one was hardest to keep steady?
8.Imagine the cotton wool feels dry at an observation. What should you do, and what should you avoid?
9.Write one conclusion about how your cress changed over the investigation. Include a measurement or another specific observation.
