Narrative Writing Basics

Read the story, explore how it works, and then plan an exciting narrative of your own. Write in complete sentences where needed.

The Lantern in the Rain

On a windy Saturday evening, Niamh and her older brother Cian were walking home along the coast near their village. The sky had turned the colour of slate, and rain tapped against their coats. Niamh carried a small brass lantern that had belonged to her grandaunt. It flickered whenever the wind blew. A sudden gust snatched the lantern from Niamh’s hand. It rolled down the grassy bank and stopped beside a narrow gap in the rocks. From inside the gap came a tiny, frightened squeak. Cian shone his torch into the darkness. A young dog was trapped behind a fallen branch, with seawater beginning to creep towards it. “We need to get help,” said Cian, “but we can’t leave it in the rising water.” Niamh held the lantern close while Cian carefully moved the branch. The dog squeezed free just as a wave splashed over the rocks. It shook itself, spraying them both. Together, they carried it to the path and hurried to a nearby cottage, where its relieved owner was waiting. Niamh looked at the lantern. Its flame was still glowing.

Understand the story

A narrative is a story that entertains or shares an experience. Most narratives have an orientation (characters and setting), a complication (a problem or exciting event), and a resolution (how the problem is solved or the story ends).

1.In “The Lantern in the Rain”, name the two main characters and describe when and where the story begins.
2.Which event creates the main problem in “The Lantern in the Rain”?
  • Niamh and Cian set off for a walk.
  • The wind blows the lantern away, and they discover a trapped dog near rising seawater.
  • The dog shakes water onto the children.
  • The children reach a cottage.
3.Number these events from 1 to 4 in the order they happen in the story: the children take the dog to its owner; the lantern is blown away; Cian moves the branch; Niamh and Cian walk along the coast.
4.How is the main problem resolved, and what detail at the end gives the story a satisfying finish?
5.The story says, “The sky had turned the colour of slate.” What does this description help the reader imagine?
  • A bright, sunny morning
  • A grey, stormy sky
  • A sky full of stars
  • A clear, warm evening
6.What does Niamh and Cian’s decision to help the dog suggest about them? Give one detail from the story to support your idea.

Plan a new narrative

Imagine that a strange sound leads a character to an unexpected discovery. Plan your own story using the prompts below. Your story can be set in Ireland or somewhere you invent.

7.Plan the beginning of your story: who is the main character, where and when does it happen, and what detail will help the reader picture the setting?
8.What surprising problem or exciting event will interrupt your character’s day? Explain why it matters to the character.
9.How will your character respond to the problem, and how will your story end? Make the ending connect to the complication.
10.Write one vivid opening sentence for your planned narrative. Include a detail that helps create a mood, such as a sound, a colour, or the weather.
Draw one important moment from your planned story. Add a speech bubble or a few labels to show what is happening.
