The Last Dance

The hall in Cork was almost silent except for the rain ticking against its tall windows. It was early evening in November, and the final round of the county dance competition was about to begin. Róisín and Ciara waited behind the curtain in their bright blue costumes. Their music player had stopped working during the break. Without the music, they could not begin their planned routine. Tadhg, who was helping backstage, hurried over with a small speaker. He had saved a copy of the music on his phone, but the speaker’s battery light was flashing red. Róisín felt her stomach tighten. The other dancers were already taking their places. Ciara looked around the crowded hall. Near the judges’ table, she spotted a spare charging cable plugged into a wall socket. Tadhg connected the speaker. The battery light turned green just as the announcer called their names. Róisín and Ciara ran on stage and began their dance. When the final note ended, the audience burst into applause. They had not danced exactly as they had practised, but they had stayed together and finished with a strong final turn.
