Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min – Hook and retrieval

Open with the hook and learning intentions slides. Display a familiar product, such as a muffin or smoothie, alongside a user profile: “A student who needs a filling, low-cost breakfast and cannot eat dairy.” Ask: “What would need to change, and why?” Students briefly share one possible change with a partner.

  1. 5–10 min – Clarify the design task

Use the design task and success criteria slides to explain that students will plan, not cook, an adapted fruit or baking product. Review the available products: fruit salad, smoothie, wrap, pikelet, scone or muffin. Model how a user need leads to a design decision, such as replacing an ingredient, changing portion size or reducing packaging.

  1. 10–15 min – Explore planning considerations

Refer to the planning considerations slide. Briefly discuss:

  • Ingredients and suitable substitutions
  • Nutrition, including balance, fibre, sugar and dietary needs
  • Approximate cost and reducing waste
  • Equipment and time
  • Hygiene, allergies, burns, cuts and cross-contamination

  1. 15–30 min – Individual recipe adaptation planning

They should record the original product, user needs, proposed changes, ingredients and quantities, nutrition considerations, estimated cost, equipment, key method steps and safety controls. Circulate and conference with students, prompting: “How does this change help your user?” and “Could this be made safely with the available equipment?”

  1. 30–37 min – Peer feedback

Show the peer feedback instructions slide. In pairs, students explain their plan in one minute. Their partner gives feedback using two prompts: “One decision that clearly meets the user’s needs is…” and “One question or improvement is…”. Students make at least one refinement to their worksheet.

  1. 37–42 min – Share and evaluate

Use the share-back discussion slide. Invite three or four students to present their product, user and most important adaptation. Class members identify the design consideration being demonstrated: nutrition, cost, equipment, sustainability or safety. Reinforce that a successful technological outcome is fit for its intended purpose and user.

  1. 42–45 min – Exit reflection

Finish with the plenary slide. Students complete the final reflection on the adapted recipe planning worksheet: “My strongest design decision is…” and “Before practical production, I still need to check…”. Collect worksheets to guide the final lesson.
