Overview

In this fifth lesson of Target Games Mastery, students adapt throwing techniques to meet changing target, distance and equipment challenges. They use peer feedback to refine force, body alignment and sequencing, then record results to identify which adaptations improve accuracy.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Welcome, safety and retrieval. Teacher checks footwear and boundaries, establishes the rule “throw only on the signal, collect only on the signal”, and opens the challenge introduction slides to show three target situations: close and large, far and large, and close and small. Students move to the throwing area, recall one technique cue from the previous lesson, and identify what might need to change for each target.

  2. 7–15 min · Demonstration and challenge planning. Teacher demonstrates a standing throw with a soft ball or beanbag, exaggerating side-on alignment, push from the legs, trunk rotation, arm extension and follow-through; teacher then changes distance and target size while thinking aloud about force and release. Students watch from behind the safety line, practise the sequence without equipment, and choose one variable they predict they will need to adapt.

  3. 15–30 min · Adaptive challenge circuit. Teacher places students in groups of five at six clearly separated stations, with one thrower, one observer, one recorder, one equipment manager and one safety checker; after every attempt, roles rotate. Students complete three attempts at each station: change distance, target height or target size, and equipment where appropriate; they record hits out of three and note the technique change that helped. Teacher circulates, asking, “What changed?”, “What stayed the same?”, and “Where did your force come from?”

  4. 30–42 min · Peer coaching round. Teacher pauses the class and models useful feedback: “Your side-on stance helped your accuracy. Try pointing your non-throwing hand at the target before release.” Students work in pairs, taking turns to throw and coach using the structure “I noticed… Try…”, focusing on one agreed cue such as alignment, force, release point or follow-through. Each thrower makes a deliberate adjustment and completes two further attempts.

  5. 42–53 min · Progression challenge. Teacher invites groups to select a realistic progression: increase distance, reduce target size, add a target zone, or use a less familiar implement, ensuring the challenge remains safe and achievable. Students predict their score, complete three throws, record the result, and compare it with their earlier score. They discuss whether the adaptation improved accuracy and why.

  6. 53–60 min · Reflection and exit check. Teacher brings students together, revisits the reflection and plenary slides, and asks groups to share one successful adaptation and one coaching phrase. Students complete a verbal or written exit response: “When the target changed, I adapted ___ by ___; this affected my accuracy because ___.” Equipment is returned only after the teacher’s signal.
