Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and purpose. Open with the introduction and hook slides showing two lip-balm packages and ask, “What makes you trust one product more than another?” Students discuss what a lip balm needs to do and identify useful packaging features such as clear information, protection and visual appeal.

  2. 5–15 min · Investigate beeswax. Use the beeswax information slides to explain that beeswax is produced by honey bees and is solid at room temperature, melts when gently heated, helps thicken lip balm and forms a protective layer. Compare it with a liquid oil and a softer butter: beeswax can provide structure and a less runny product, but it is not suitable for people avoiding animal-derived ingredients. Students complete the material-properties section of the beeswax and product design worksheet, recording observations and one advantage and limitation of beeswax. Clarify that “natural” does not automatically mean safe or better; the material must suit the purpose and user.

  3. 15–23 min · Safety and demonstration. Display the safety and method slides and demonstrate the process without students handling hot equipment: measure a pre-prepared beeswax-and-oil mixture, place it in a heatproof container, melt it using a teacher-controlled hot-water bath, stir with a clean wooden stick and pour into a labelled container.   5. 38–52 min · Design packaging. Introduce the design brief: create packaging for a named user, such as a family member, outdoor adventurer or person wanting plastic-free packaging. Students complete the packaging plan on the beeswax and product design worksheet, then sketch a label or sleeve. It must include a product name, intended user, ingredients, directions for use, a safety statement such as “Do not eat” and a design choice that protects or identifies the product. Prompt students to organise information into categories: product information, user instructions, safety and branding.

  6. 52–60 min · Evaluate and share. Groups place their sample and packaging sketch on tables for a quick gallery walk. Students use “I notice…” and “I wonder…” to give feedback, then finish with the reflection prompts exit-ticket slips.
