Teaching Instructions

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and benchmark brainstorm. Display the opening benchmark challenge and ask, “How could you estimate the length of this table without measuring it?” Model familiar benchmarks such as a finger width, hand span, arm span, a 1-minute walk to school, or the mass of a full drink bottle. Students share benchmarks and explain why each might be useful.

  2. 4–8 min · Teach the estimating routine. Use the benchmark and measuring routine to introduce: choose a benchmark, estimate, record the unit, measure or time, compare, and explain. Demonstrate estimating the length of a pencil using a finger width, then measure it with a ruler; explicitly distinguish an estimate from a guess.

  3. 8–10 min · Pair instructions and safety. Distribute the pair estimation and measurement recording sheet and show the pair investigation instructions. Explain that each pair will investigate four classroom items or activities: one length, one mass, one capacity and one duration. Students decide who records first and who measures, then swap roles.

  4. 10–20 min · Pair investigation. Pairs choose suitable items from the teacher’s prepared selection, record an estimate and benchmark before measuring, and use the appropriate tool or timer. Students measure length in centimetres or metres, mass in grams or kilograms, capacity in millilitres or litres, and duration in seconds or minutes. Circulate and ask, “Why did you choose that benchmark?”, “Is your unit sensible?”, and “How close is your estimate?”

  5. 20–26 min · Compare and discuss. Display the comparison discussion prompts. Pairs calculate or describe the difference between each estimate and actual result, then circle their most accurate estimate and underline their least accurate one on the worksheet. Partners discuss which familiar benchmark helped most and what they would change next time.

  6. 26–30 min · Share and exit check. Invite two or three pairs to share one successful estimate and their reasoning. Finish with the reflection and exit prompt: “Estimate the length of the whiteboard using a hand span, then explain how you could check it.” Students write their response on the worksheet and hand it in.
