Lesson structure (120 minutes)

  1. 0–20 minutes – Demonstrate the app and setup

Open with the stop-motion introduction slides. Show a short example of smooth and jerky animation, then ask: “What makes the movement look believable?” Introduce the production roles: animator, photographer, director and continuity checker.

Demonstrate how to position the device, lock the camera, place the set, adjust lighting, move an object a small distance, capture a frame, delete an unwanted frame, preview the sequence and save files. Model a clear file name, such as Team3_Test_01. Emphasise careful handling of equipment and keeping hands, shadows and loose objects out of the frame.

  1. 20–40 minutes – Practise a test sequence

Place students in teams of four or five and assign accessible roles. Distribute the stop-motion planning and capture sheet. Teams use the checklist to set up their camera and create a short test sequence of approximately 8–12 frames.

Pause after several frames so teams can preview their work. Ask them to check: Is the camera still? Are the object movements small and even? Has the lighting or background changed? Provide quick coaching before teams complete and save their test.

  1. 40–100 minutes – Build sets and capture planned frames

Teams review their plan from Lesson 1, build a stable set and begin capturing their main sequence. The director checks the plan, the continuity checker monitors lighting and set position, the animator moves the object, and the photographer captures each frame. Students should swap roles halfway through so everyone develops practical skills.

Display the production steps from the stop-motion introduction slides: set up, check the frame, move slightly, capture, preview, repeat and save. Circulate with a progress check at approximately 60 and 80 minutes. Encourage teams to record which frame they have reached and save a backup or clearly labelled version where possible.

Suggested targets are 20–30 frames for a simple movement. Students do not need to rush; consistent, controlled frames are more important than a long animation. Remind teams to stop and ask before changing the camera angle or lighting.

  1. 100–115 minutes – Review and reshoot

Teams watch their footage with sound off and complete the review section of the stop-motion planning and capture sheet. They identify one successful feature and one problem, such as a camera wobble, uneven movement, a hand in the frame, or a change in lighting.

Teams reshoot only the problem section where possible. Students compare the first and improved versions and save the improved file with a new, clear name. Confer with groups that need help locating frames, trimming mistakes or organising files.

  1. 115–120 minutes – Team check-in and reflection

Return to the stop-motion introduction slides for the closing prompts: “What did we control successfully?” and “What will we change before the next lesson?” Each student shares one production decision and one next step. Collect the completed planning sheets or photograph them for assessment records, and confirm that each team’s file is saved in the correct class folder.
