Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and listening comparison Open with the hook and listening slides. Play or demonstrate the class melody first on its own, then with a simple chord pattern and backing vocal. Ask: “Which version feels more complete, and what caused the change?” Students briefly identify mood, texture and vocal placement.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Teach harmony choices Use the harmony teaching slides to review melody, chord and bass relationships. Demonstrate two or three suitable chord options using the class melody, such as major, minor or a repeated four-chord pattern. Explain that students do not need advanced theory: they should listen for whether a chord sounds settled, tense or unsuitable. Model a backing vocal using held notes, repeated syllables or a short response phrase.

  3. 12–17 minutes – Plan in pairs Place students in five pairs and distribute the harmony planning worksheet. Each pair writes the melody’s key or tonal centre if known, proposes two or three chords, and sketches a backing-vocal idea. Encourage students to sing, play or programme options before committing. The teacher checks plans and supports pairs who are unsure about chord choices.

  4. 17–32 minutes – Create and record Use the creation task slides for the step-by-step workflow. Pairs open their existing digital projects, duplicate the melody track, and add either programmed chords, a keyboard/guitar part or a suitable loop. They then record or programme one backing-vocal layer. Students should keep the original melody clear, name their tracks and save a new version. The teacher circulates, helping with input levels, timing, key matching and safe equipment use.

  5. 32–40 minutes – Refine the arrangement Pairs listen back with the melody, harmony and backing vocal together. They make at least two changes, such as altering a chord, moving the backing vocal to a different section, changing its rhythm, adjusting volume or adding a short fade. Ask pairs to mute and unmute tracks so they can judge what each layer contributes. Students complete the reflection questions on the harmony planning worksheet.

  6. 40–47 minutes – Share and peer feedback Each pair plays approximately 30–45 seconds of its arrangement to another pair or to the class, depending on equipment and confidence. Use the peer-feedback slides to structure feedback: one effective harmony choice, one clear backing-vocal feature and one possible refinement. Feedback must refer to musical evidence, such as mood, balance, texture or contrast.

  7. 47–50 minutes – Exit reflection Finish with the success-criteria exit ticket slips. Students identify which success criteria they met and write one specific next step for lesson 12. Collect the slips as they leave and ensure all digital work is saved in the agreed class folder.
