Overview

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Visual hook. Teacher displays two photographs of the same classroom object: one wide shot and one close-up, using the opening comparison slide, and asks, “How has the photographer changed what we notice?” Students make a quick observation and discuss the effect of distance, angle and orientation with a partner.

  2. 5–15 min · Safety and responsibility briefing. Teacher uses the camera safety and responsibility slides to model safe handling: use the strap or two hands, walk with equipment, keep cameras away from water and edges, check the space before moving, never look directly at the sun through a viewfinder, and return equipment carefully. Discuss permission, privacy, respectful photographing, copyright and appropriate school use.   3. 15–22 min · Camera demonstration. Students handle equipment only when instructed, identify the controls on their device and practise taking one test image of a non-person object.

  4. 22–37 min · Framing challenge. Teacher places students in groups of three, with roles of photographer, subject/object manager and safety observer. Using the practical challenge instruction slide, set the task: photograph one ordinary object in three ways—an establishing shot showing context, a close-up showing detail, and an unusual viewpoint from above, below or the side. Students rotate roles, remain in the agreed area, and take no photographs of people without clear permission.

  5. 37–44 min · Review and peer feedback. Teacher displays the feedback prompt slide and asks students to select their strongest image. In pairs, students show one image and respond: “I notice…”, “The camera choice makes me feel/think…”, and “A possible improvement is…”. Students record a short explanation of their strongest framing on the worksheet.

  6. 44–50 min · Plenary and equipment check. Teacher revisits the opening comparison and asks students to explain how a camera choice changes meaning. Students complete the final worksheet prompt—“One safety rule I will follow and one camera choice I will use deliberately are…”—then return devices, check lenses and cables, and confirm the equipment count.
