Overview

This 30-minute session is designed for a single Year 6 student to deeply understand paragraph identification, paragraph formation, and enriching their vocabulary in writing. It aligns tightly with the New Zealand Curriculum Refresh (2023), focusing on Māori and English language learning outcomes and writing competencies.

Lesson Breakdown

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Quickly discuss what a paragraph is and why writers use paragraphs.

• Show a brief two-paragraph text (printed or digital).

• Together, read aloud and use coloured markers to highlight paragraph breaks.

• Ask the student to explain how they know where one paragraph ends and the next begins.
