Overview

Students compare and analyse a range of jewellery designs, considering how form, function, materials, texture, colour, pattern, proportion, balance and ergonomics shape an outcome. They investigate cultural influences, sustainability and intended users, then communicate evidence-based conclusions using appropriate design language and propose an informed jewellery design improvement.

Learning intentions

Students will:

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and notice. Display two contrasting jewellery designs, such as a contemporary pendant and a culturally significant piece. Ask, “Who might use or wear each piece, and what makes each suitable?” Students silently record observations, discuss with a partner and share evidence about form, function, materials, colour and texture.

  2. 7–17 min · Direct teaching. Introduce form, function, materials, texture, colour, pattern, proportion, balance and ergonomics. Explain that analysis also considers intended user, cultural influences and sustainability. Model a comparison of two jewellery images, thinking aloud about visual evidence, comfort, durability, ethical materials and meaning. Students annotate examples using a design vocabulary bank.

  3. 17–25 min · Jewellery design detective activity. In groups of three or four, students examine a range of jewellery designs, such as rings, pendants, bracelets, earrings, body adornment and culturally specific pieces. Each group identifies at least five elements or principles, records similarities and differences, and explains how two features affect the user or purpose. Probe with, “What evidence supports your judgement?”, “How might this feel to wear?”, and “What cultural or sustainability considerations are visible?”

  4. 25–30 min · Comparison brief and planning. Reveal the brief: “Compare two jewellery designs and recommend which is more effective for a specified user and purpose.” Students select or receive two examples, identify the intended user, and complete a comparison organiser covering form, function, materials, texture, colour, pattern, proportion, balance, ergonomics, cultural influences and sustainability. They plan one justified improvement.

  5. 30–47 min · Individual analysis task. Students annotate images or create labelled comparison sketches and write a structured response using evidence from both designs. They must make a clear judgement and justify it. Circulate for conferences, asking students to connect design choices to user, purpose, comfort, meaning and environmental impact. Pause halfway for a “design check”: students highlight their strongest comparison and add one missing consideration.

  6. 47–55 min · Peer critique and refinement. Students exchange work and use the prompts: “I notice…”, “A strong comparison is…”, and “One question or improvement is…”. The reviewer checks for evidence from both designs and consideration of the intended user, ergonomics, culture and sustainability. Students record feedback and refine one claim or annotation.

  7. 55–60 min · Gallery share and exit reflection. Students view the comparisons and identify one convincing judgement. Complete the reflection: name the most influential design element or principle, explain how it affects the user or purpose, and state one sustainable or culturally respectful improvement.
