Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and connect to prior learning Open with the playground hook and learning intentions. Show two contrasting playground images or descriptions and ask: “Which playground would more people enjoy, and why?” Students think, pair-share, then contribute ideas. Explain that today they will improve their team’s design brief, not draw the final playground.

  2. 5–12 minutes – Notice design choices Use the playground comparison slides to examine local and other playgrounds. In teams of four or five, students identify examples of features that create movement, challenge, rest, adventure or belonging. Prompt: “What does this feature allow people to do?” and “Who might find it useful or difficult?” Record ideas on the board under the five headings.

  3. 12–20 minutes – Teach the design brief requirements Display the design brief checklist. Explain that a design brief tells a designer who the playground is for, what it must include and what limits apply. Model one example: “For younger children and wheelchair users, include a wide, firm path to a low climbing platform.” Clarify the difference between a wish and a success criterion: “It has fun equipment” is difficult to check; “It includes three different ways to move” is measurable.

  4. 20–32 minutes – Refine team briefs Distribute the playground design brief organiser to each team. Teams choose or confirm a community and user group, such as a school, neighbourhood or coastal community, and users such as younger children, older children, whānau or people with mobility needs. They complete the sections for required equipment, accessibility features, materials, safety limits and available space. Circulate and ask: “What evidence supports this choice?” and “How will you know your design works?”

  5. 32–39 minutes – Peer review Teams swap worksheets with a nearby team. Using the peer-review prompts, reviewers identify one clear feature, one missing requirement and one success criterion that could be made more measurable. The original team discusses the feedback and makes at least two improvements to its brief.

  6. 39–45 minutes – Share and assess Invite two or three teams to read their user group, one design decision and one success criterion. Return to the plenary questions: “How can design help more people belong?” and “Which safety or space limit changed your thinking?” Collect the completed worksheets for assessment and note students’ explanations during sharing.
