Teaching Instructions

create a lesson plan with 4 sessions with the book 'dot to dot' from the phonics plus series. focusing on the letters m a d p a t n i

Overview

In this 15-minute small-group session, students revisit the letter–sound correspondences m, a, d, p, t, n, and i while reading Dot to Dot from the Phonics Plus series. The teacher builds knowledge through explicit modelling, shared reading, oral blending and a short independent response.

Learning intentions

  • WALT hear and say the sounds for m, a, d, p, t, n, and i.
  • WALT blend sounds together to read simple words.
  • WALT use the pictures and print in Dot to Dot to help us read.
  • WALT work towards a specific reading goal: reading each focus sound accurately.

Success criteria

  • I can point to a focus letter and say its sound.
  • I can say the sounds in a word and blend them together.
  • I can join in with the reading and track the words from left to right.
  • I can show one sound or word I can read independently.

Curriculum links

  • English — Planning and drafting: students build the knowledge needed for meaningful language use through shared reading, discussion and relevant learning experiences.
  • English — Writing Processes / Planning: students identify and work towards a specific learning goal.
  • English — Oral language and reading practices: students listen, speak, notice print and use sound–letter knowledge to make meaning.
  • Te Mātaiaho competencies: students participate, communicate ideas, and manage themselves during a focused literacy routine.

Lesson structure (15 minutes)

  1. 0–3 min · Sound warm-up. Teacher opens with the sound-picture introduction slide and displays the focus letters one at a time: m, a, d, p, t, n, i. Say each sound clearly, avoiding an added “uh”, and invite students to repeat, stretch continuous sounds where possible, and make the matching action if one has already been taught. Students echo the sounds, identify any letter they recognise quickly, and give a thumbs-up when ready to read.

  2. 3–6 min · Model and blend. Teacher uses the blending practice slides to model left-to-right blending with suitable words from the book, such as mat, map, pat, pan, tap, or dam, only where those words appear in the text. Point under each grapheme, sound-talk the word, then blend it smoothly. Students use their fingers to tap each sound, then sweep under the word and say it normally. Ask: “What did we do first?” and “What helped us read the word?”

  3. 6–9 min · Shared book reading. Teacher introduces Dot to Dot and briefly discusses the cover or page illustration to build meaning before reading. Open the book-reading prompt slide for the reminder: “Look at the letters, say the sounds, blend the word, then check that it makes sense.” Read the book aloud once while students follow the print; reread the relevant pages together, pausing for students to decode focus words and respond to a simple picture or meaning question. Students track print with a finger, join in with repeated language, and attempt the focus words.

  4. 9–12 min · Partner reread and sound hunt. Teacher pairs the 10 students and gives each pair a copy of Dot to Dot or shares copies between pairs. Display the partner-reading instruction slide: “Partner A reads or points; Partner B listens and helps with the sounds; swap.” Students reread a short section, locate one or two focus letters, and tell their partner the sound. Prompt rather than supplying the answer: “Point to the first letter. What sound? Now blend.”

  5. 12–15 min · Record and reflect. Distribute the letter–sound and blending practice sheet. Students complete a very short task: circle or trace two focus letters, match or say their sounds, and attempt one CVC word using the lesson’s sound set. Finish with the goal and reflection slide. Each student tells the teacher or group, “I can read ___,” or points to a letter and gives its sound. Collect the sheets for the next teaching decision.

Resources

  • Dot to Dot from the Phonics Plus series
  • the sound, blending, book-reading and reflection slide deck
  • the letter–sound and blending practice sheet
  • Magnetic letters or mini whiteboards
  • Pencils and erasers
  • One copy of the book for the teacher and shared copies for pairs
  • Finger-tracking strips or reading pointers, if available

Assessment

  • Listen during the warm-up for accurate production of m, a, d, p, t, n, and i, noting letters that need reteaching.
  • During blending and partner reading, record whether each student can identify the initial sound, blend a CVC word, and track print from left to right.
  • Use the worksheet and final oral response as an exit check: group students for the next session according to sound recognition, blending confidence and ability to use print alongside pictures.

Differentiation

  • Support students by reducing the number of letters shown at one time, providing magnetic letters for manipulation, and using the sentence stem, “The first sound is ___; now I can blend ___.”
  • For students who need additional processing time, rehearse each sound quietly with an adult before partner reading and allow pointing, oral response or drawing instead of extensive writing.
  • Support English language learners with clear mouth modelling, gesture, repeated oral practice and brief picture discussion before decoding.
  • Challenge confident readers to reread a sentence smoothly, explain how they checked an unfamiliar word, or build another CVC word using the focus letters without moving beyond the lesson’s sound set.
