Preparation and Materials

• A colourful Easter storybook that features Easter symbols.
• Plastic Easter eggs (or images of eggs).
• Small toy bunnies or bunny cut-outs.
• Real or paper flowers.
• A soft Easter-themed song to play during the activity.
• A simple craft activity template (bunny or egg picture for colouring).
• A basket for a mini Easter symbol hunt.

Lesson Structure (30 Minutes)

1. Welcome and Settling In (5 minutes)

• Gather children in a circle on a soft mat.
• Begin with a friendly greeting: "Kia ora, tamariki! Today, we are going on a special Easter adventure!"
• Briefly introduce Easter as a time of happiness and new beginnings.

2. Story Time: Discovering Easter Symbols (7 minutes)

• Read a carefully chosen big book or picture book about Easter that includes key symbols.
• As you read, pause to ask questions:
  • "What do you see on this page?"
  • "What do you think the eggs mean?"
  • "Why do we have bunnies at Easter?"

3. Sensory Symbol Hunt (8 minutes)

• Explain that Easter is full of hidden surprises, just like how new life is hiding in eggs or behind flowers.
• Spread the toy bunnies, plastic eggs, and flowers around a designated small area.
• Allow children to go on a mini Easter symbol hunt and place their findings in a communal basket.
• Once all items are collected, discuss what they represent using simple language.

4. Creative Easter Craft (7 minutes)

• Provide children with bunny or egg-shaped colouring templates.
• Encourage them to choose bright colours that make them feel happy, just like Easter is a happy time!
• Play soft instrumental Easter-themed music in the background as they colour.

5. Reflection and Farewell (3 minutes)

• Sit together again and look at the collected symbols one last time.
• Ask: "Which Easter symbol did you like the most, and why?"
• End with a friendly goodbye: "Ka kite! Next time, we will learn more about the Easter story!"
