9:00-10:00: Maths

Learning Objective

Students will be able to understand and apply basic addition and subtraction within 20, and explore simple patterns.

  • Curriculum Area: Mathematics and Statistics (Level 1)
  • Key Competencies: Thinking, Using Language, Symbols, and Texts

Activities

  1. Warm-Up (10 mins): Quick-fire questions on addition and subtraction within 10. Use mini whiteboards for quick response.
  2. Main Activity (35 mins):
  • Addition and Subtraction Board Game: Place students in pairs. Each pair will play a custom-made board game that requires them to solve addition and subtraction problems to move forward.
  1. Patterns Exploration (15 mins):
  • Pattern Blocks: Students will create patterns using blocks, then describe and write the pattern rules.
  1. Review (5 mins): Group discussion about their favourite parts of the game and pattern activity.

10:00-10:10: Brain Break

  • Activity: Simon Says - focusing on physical movements to refresh and energise the students.

10:10-11:10: Reading

Students will develop reading comprehension skills and can identify main ideas and details in a story.

  1. Read Aloud (15 mins):
  • Teacher reads “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson.
  1. Partner Reading (20 mins):
  • Students pair up and re-read the story, taking turns reading aloud.
  1. Comprehension Activity (25 mins):
  • Gruffalo Character Map: Students create maps showing different characters, setting, and main events.
  • Main Idea and Details: After creating the character maps, discuss the main idea and significant details, and write a summary.

11:10-11:25: Morning Tea

11:25-12:25: Writing

Students will be able to write simple narratives with clear beginning, middle, and end.

  1. Mini Lesson (10 mins):
  • Introduction to writing narratives: Discuss the elements of a story - beginning, middle, and end.
  1. Writing Activity (30 mins):
  • Story Starters: Provide three different story starters and let students choose one to create their story. For example, “Once upon a time, in a magical forest, a tiny dragon discovered a hidden cave...”
  1. Peer Review (15 mins):
  • Pair students to read and give feedback on each other's stories, focusing on what they liked and one way to improve.
  1. Sharing (10 mins):
  • Have a few students share their stories with the class.

2:20-3:00: Review and Share

  1. Sharing Time (20 mins):
  • Allow students to present their nature collages and talk about their work. Encourage questions and discussions.
  1. Reflection (10 mins):
  • Students will write or draw one thing they enjoyed and one thing they learned today, to be shared in a closing group circle.

End the day with a group reflection on the day's activities and highlight achievements and key learning moments.
