Lesson Objective

Students will be introduced to different ways of conducting research on a given topic using age-appropriate tools and templates. They will practice gathering information using apps and organizing it using a prepared template.

Total Time: 30 minutes

Materials Needed

• Tablets or computers with internet access
• Pre-prepared research topic template (Printed and digital versions)
• Access to a child-friendly research app such as Kiddle or KidRex
• Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Attendance: Start the class by greeting the students and taking attendance.
2. Context Setting: Briefly explain what research is using simple terms.
   • "Research is when we look for information to learn more about something we're interested in."
3. Topic Introduction: Introduce the research topic – "Favourite Animals in New Zealand."
   • Write the topic on the whiteboard.
   • Show pictures of some popular New Zealand animals (e.g., Kiwi, Kea, Tuatara).

Interactive Discussion (5 minutes)

1. Brainstorming Session:
   • Ask the students to name some of their favourite animals in New Zealand.
   • Write their suggestions on the whiteboard.

Tool Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Introducing Research Tools:
   • Explain that today they will use special kid-friendly apps to find information.
2. Demonstration:
   • Show how to use Kiddle:
     • Open the app and type in "Kiwi bird."
     • Explore some child-friendly search results.
   • Show how to use KidRex:
     • Open the app and type in "Kea bird."
     • Navigate through the results.
3. Template Introduction:
   • Hand out the pre-prepared research topic templates to each student.
   • This template will have sections like:
     • Name of the animal
     • Description
     • Where you can find it in New Zealand
     • Fun facts
   • Show a completed example on the whiteboard.

Activity (8 minutes)

1. Guided Research:
   • Divide the students into small groups and assign each group a tablet/computer.
   • Each group will choose an animal from the brainstorming session.
   • Use the research apps to find information on their chosen animal.
   • Fill in the template with the information they gather.

Sharing and Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

1. Group Sharing:
   • Each group shares one interesting fact they found with the class.
2. Conclusion:
   • Praise the students for their hard work.
   • Encourage them to continue exploring and learning more about different animals.
