Lesson Overview

This is the final lesson in the CAGED Guitar Mastery unit. The student will demonstrate mastery of the CAGED system by performing a solo that integrates all five positions of the system. The lesson will encourage confidence, musical expression, and technical precision.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Confidently perform a solo that utilises the full CAGED system.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of phrasing, articulation, and expression through their performance.
  • Self-assess and critically reflect on their progress.
  • Receive and apply constructive feedback to refine their musical delivery.

Lesson Structure (30 minutes)

1. Warm-up & Technical Refinement (5 minutes)

  • Scale & Chord Review: The student plays through the five CAGED positions in sequence with a metronome set at 80 BPM.
  • Finger Dexterity Exercise: Execute a short legato drill spanning each shape to reinforce technique.
  • Brief Discussion: Student identifies any technical challenges still present.

2. Improvisation Exploration (7 minutes)

  • Chord Progression Exploration: The student plays a I–IV–V–I progression using the CAGED shapes in multiple positions.
  • Expressive Techniques: Discussion of dynamic contrast, bends, slides, vibrato, and phrasing.
  • Trial Improvisation: The student experiments with blending CAGED positions into a lead phrase.

3. Solo Performance (10 minutes)

  • Preparation (2 minutes): The student mentally visualises key target notes for their solo and considers expressive elements.
  • Performance (6 minutes): The student performs their complete solo over a provided backing track or metronome.
  • Immediate Self-Reflection (2 minutes): The student quickly notes one strength and one area for improvement.

4. Feedback & Reflection (8 minutes)

  • Teacher Feedback (3 minutes): Specific, constructive comments focusing on phrasing, technical execution, and musicality.
  • Self-Assessment & Adjustment (3 minutes): The student makes minor adjustments and replays a key section using applied feedback.
  • Final Discussion (2 minutes): The student discusses their overall progress in the unit, key takeaways, and next steps for independent growth.
