Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and expectations. Open with the hook and lesson overview slides showing a plain unfinished box beside a carefully presented finished product; ask, “Which one would you trust, value or want to use, and why?” Students identify visible features that affect quality and presentation, then review the learning intentions and success criteria.

  2. 5–12 min · Finishing demonstration. Use the finishing and safety slides to model a final quality check: remove pencil marks, smooth rough edges with suitable sandpaper, check that the lid or joints operate, and inspect for loose parts or excess adhesive. Reinforce workshop safety, including goggles where required, careful tool handling, dust control and leaving the workspace clean. Students collect their project and equipment, then identify one finishing priority before beginning.

  3. 12–25 min · Complete and refine. Students finish their boxes independently, using only the tools and materials approved for their design. The teacher circulates, checks safe practice, and conferences briefly with students using questions such as, “What requirement are you checking?” and “What evidence shows your joint is successful?” Early finishers may improve a small detail, such as alignment, surface quality or the neatness of their presentation area, without changing the essential design.

  4. 25–32 min · Evaluate the outcome. Distribute the box evaluation and presentation planner. Students record whether their box meets key requirements for function, appearance, strength and accuracy, giving one specific piece of evidence for each judgement. They identify one successful design decision and one limitation or improvement they would make if they had more time. The teacher samples responses and supports students to distinguish description (“the lid closes”) from evaluation (“the lid closes securely and protects the contents”).

  5. 32–39 min · Teach presentation structure. Return to the presentation structure and speaking strategies slides. Model a 45–60 second presentation: an introduction naming the purpose and intended user; a body explaining the materials, joints, processes and design decisions; and a conclusion evaluating the result and suggesting an improvement. Demonstrate speaking towards the audience, using notes rather than reading, clear volume, purposeful pace and appropriate technical vocabulary. Students rehearse once to a partner, who gives one warm and one useful feedback comment.

  6. 39–47 min · Showcase presentations. Arrange students in five groups of four. Each student presents their box for up to one minute while group members listen and ask one respectful question. Students use their planner as a prompt and place the box where the joint and key features can be seen. Listeners note one effective presentation feature and one interesting design decision; the teacher observes selected students against the success criteria and photographs outcomes if permitted by school policy.

  7. 47–50 min · Plenary and exit reflection. Use the showcase discussion and reflection slides to prompt a final class discussion: “How did presentation change the way you understood the design?” Students complete the final section of the box evaluation and presentation planner by stating what they learned about making or presenting and one next step for future projects. Invite two or three students to share.
