Overview

In this second lesson of Colossal Creatures, Clever Designs, students build on their exploration of animal adaptations by turning a useful feature into a design idea. Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Reconnect and hook. Open with the adaptation hook and example images and ask: “How could an animal body feature help people solve a problem?” Briefly revisit the previous lesson’s meaning of adaptation. Students turn and talk, then share one animal feature and what it helps the animal do.

  2. 7–17 min · Explore design inspiration. Use the nature-inspired design examples to introduce four examples: gecko-inspired grip, whale-fin blades, bird-inspired flight, and elephant-trunk tools. Explain that designers look at what a feature does rather than simply copying how it looks. Students identify the animal, adaptation, function, and possible human use in a class discussion. Record useful words and ideas on the board.

  3. 17–25 min · Model a design brief. Display the design brief model and think aloud. For example: “User: a child who enjoys exploring. Purpose: to collect small objects without touching them. Inspiration: an elephant’s trunk, because it is flexible and can grip. Materials: cardboard, paper tubes, string, and tape.” Highlight the four required parts: user, purpose, animal inspiration, and materials.   4. 25–40 min · Generate ideas. Distribute the adaptation-to-idea planning sheet. Confer with students using prompts such as, “What does the adaptation help the animal do?” and “How will your design help its user?”

  5. 40–51 min · Select and communicate. Students compare their three ideas and circle one to develop. They complete the design brief on the worksheet, including the user, purpose, animal inspiration, feature/function, and materials. Students may write, draw and label, or use speech-to-text. Partners explain their selected brief to each other; listeners ask, “What problem does it solve?” and “Which animal feature inspired it?”

  6. 51–57 min · Share and give feedback. Invite four or five students to present their idea using the sharing prompts. Classmates give one glow linked to the success criteria and one wondering question. Collect examples of different ways an adaptation can inspire a design.

  7. 57–60 min · Exit reflection. Students complete the traffic-light check-in exit ticket slips. They indicate whether they are ready to develop their idea, getting there, or need more help, and respond to the prompts about what they learned and their next step.
