Teaching Instructions

We are playing futsal inside, we are doing our 3rd lesson on futsal, and I would like to have some more game-based activities for the students to play.

Overview

In this third futsal lesson, students apply previously practised passing, receiving, dribbling and defending skills in increasingly game-like situations. The focus is on creating space, supporting the ball carrier, making quick attacking and defensive decisions, and using safe, respectful communication.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • Apply passing, receiving, dribbling and defending skills under pressure.
  • Create and use space by making supporting runs and changing direction.
  • Use simple attacking and defensive tactics in small-sided games.
  • Communicate respectfully and make safe decisions during competition.

Success criteria

  • I can move into space and offer a clear passing option.
  • I can decide when to pass, dribble or protect the ball.
  • I can recover quickly and defend goal-side when possession is lost.
  • I can communicate positively and follow futsal safety expectations.

Curriculum links

  • Movement skills (Invasion games): applying advanced outfield skills, offensive and defensive tactics, set plays, terminology and body positioning.
  • Movement skills (Sport): participating safely and adapting movement decisions to the needs of the activity.
  • Health and Physical Education key competencies: managing self, relating to others, participating and contributing, and thinking.

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and safety briefing. Teacher explains that today’s challenge is to make effective decisions in game situations, revises the stop signal, and checks indoor court boundaries, footwear and safe-contact expectations. Students listen, identify one personal focus, and move safely to their assigned area.

  2. 5–12 min · Game-based warm-up: Numbers futsal. Teacher divides the class into two groups of nine or ten, creates two small courts, and calls out numbers to send players into each court for a 3v3 or 4v4 game while others recover around the court. Students pass, move and defend at moderate intensity; when possession changes, they immediately transition between attack and defence. Rotate players frequently so everyone is active.

  3. 12–22 min · Overload game: 3v2 to goal. Teacher sets up two channels, each with an attacking line, two defenders and a goalkeeper or target player; attackers begin with the ball and have six seconds to create a shot. Students use width, support behind the ball and quick passing to beat the defenders, then rotate roles after each attempt. Pause briefly to ask: “Where could the non-ball players move to make the defender choose?”

  4. 22–34 min · End-zone possession game. Teacher organises three teams: two teams play 4v4, while the third team rests, referees informally and collects the ball; a team scores by receiving a pass under control in the opponent’s end zone. Students must complete at least two passes before scoring and restart quickly from the sideline. Rotate the resting team every three minutes. Encourage students to identify when to keep possession, switch play or run forward.

  5. 34–46 min · Conditioned futsal tournament. Teacher runs short 4v4 games across two courts, with one substitute per team and games lasting four minutes. Award one goal for a normal score and two for a goal created after a clear supporting run, wall pass or defensive recovery; teams self-manage substitutions and keep the score. Students apply tactics in realistic play, communicate, transition immediately after turnovers and demonstrate fair play. Stop once for a tactical reset: teams name one successful attacking choice and one defensive adjustment.

  6. 46–50 min · Cool-down and reflection. Teacher leads slow walking, breathing and lower-body stretches, then asks students to reflect with a partner before sharing one response: “What decision helped your team most today?” Students lower their intensity, stretch safely and state one skill or tactic they will improve next lesson.

Resources

  • Indoor futsal court with clearly marked boundaries
  • Futsal balls, one for each court plus spare balls
  • Cones for channels and end zones
  • Two portable goals or target goals
  • Coloured bibs for three teams
  • Stopwatch or phone timer
  • Whistle and clipboard
  • Whiteboard for key words: support, width, transition, goal-side
  • First-aid kit and water access

Assessment

  • Observe whether students move into space, provide support and make an appropriate pass, dribble or protection decision during the overload game.
  • Use questioning during pauses: “What was the defender trying to stop?” and “How did your team create a passing lane?” Listen for students using relevant tactical language.
  • During the tournament, note communication, safe body positioning, transition after losing possession and inclusive participation. Ask each student to identify one effective decision and one next step during the final reflection.

Differentiation

  • Support students by reducing defensive pressure, allowing an extra touch, using larger end zones or providing a neutral support player who always plays with the team in possession.
  • Pair less-confident students with encouraging teammates and give clear roles such as first defender, wide support or safety pass. Use demonstrations rather than lengthy verbal explanations.
  • Challenge confident students with two-touch play, a three-second decision rule, weaker-foot passing or a requirement to switch the ball before scoring.
  • Adapt court size, ball type, pace and playing time for students with mobility, coordination, sensory or confidence needs. Use mixed-ability teams, avoid high-speed challenges near walls, and reinforce non-contact defending, controlled tackles and respectful communication.
