Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and prior knowledge Open with the geometry hook and learning intentions. Ask: “Where might we find geometry in our classroom, playground or homes?” Students quietly identify one object, then share with a partner. Introduce geometry as the study of shape, space, position and patterns.

  2. 5–11 minutes – Familiar-object classification warm-up Display photographs or illustrations of everyday objects in the familiar-object classification slide. In pairs, students decide how to sort them, such as objects with flat faces, objects with curved surfaces, objects that roll, or objects with corners. Invite several pairs to explain their rule; emphasise that a classification rule must be clear and observable.

  3. 11–21 minutes – Explicit teaching and modelling Use the 2D and 3D vocabulary slides to distinguish a flat 2D shape from a solid 3D object. Model describing a rectangle using side, vertex, right angle and line of symmetry, then model describing a rectangular prism using face, edge and vertex. Clarify that a 3D object may have 2D shapes as faces. Think aloud: “I know this is a rectangular prism because it has flat rectangular faces, straight edges and vertices.”

  4. 21–29 minutes – Guided shape sorting Give each pair a small selection of shape cards from the 2D Shape Property Cards. Students sort the cards using one chosen property, then reshuffle and sort them using a different property. Pause for a class check: ask pairs to name their rule and identify a shape that was difficult to place. Challenge students to notice that one shape can belong to more than one group.

  5. 29–40 minutes – Independent observations Distribute the geometry observations worksheet. Students choose or are assigned familiar 2D shapes and 3D objects, draw or name them, and record properties using sentence frames where needed. They should include at least three observations and one classification explanation, for example: “I placed the cylinder in the rolling group because it has a curved surface.”

  6. 40–45 minutes – Share and exit reflection Return to the discussion and plenary slides. Invite students to share one precise vocabulary word and one observation. Ask students to complete the final reflection on the worksheet: “One property I can now describe is…” Collect worksheets to identify vocabulary and misconception needs for Lesson 2.
