Overview

Students build on their month of map, contour and practical navigation work by learning to locate and communicate positions using four- and six-figure grid references, then orientate and navigate with a magnetic compass. The lesson moves from map-based accuracy to a short outdoor application in pairs.

Learning intentions

Students will:

Lesson structure (55 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Navigation hook. Teacher displays a topographic map with a marked feature and asks, “How could you tell another group exactly where this is without pointing?” Open with the map-based hook and lesson overview. Students make a quick individual estimate of the feature’s location, then compare answers with a partner.

  2. 5–15 min · Teach grid references. Teacher models the rule “read right, then up”, using a large map example to show a four-figure reference for a square and a six-figure reference for a specific feature; check each step aloud. Students annotate the grid reference and compass practice sheet and complete two guided examples, explaining why the easting is read first.

  3. 15–24 min · Paired map challenge. Students use a grid reference to identify the next checkpoint, orientate their map, take a bearing and walk the route, recording the checkpoint reference, bearing and one decision made; partners swap navigator and checker roles halfway.

  6. 48–55 min · Debrief and exit check. Teacher brings students together, revisits the key steps on the route instructions, discussion prompts and plenary and asks pairs to share one accuracy strategy and one safety consideration. Students complete the final worksheet questions: give a six-figure reference for a marked feature, state the first two steps for using a compass, and identify one error they will avoid next time.
