Objective

To develop and enhance Year 4 students' handwriting skills by focusing on the letter "X" and incorporating 'heart words' into their practice. This lesson aligns with Level 2 of The New Zealand Curriculum, particularly within the 'English' learning area under 'Writing'.

Lesson Plan

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Settling: Welcome the students and settle them at their desks.
2. Objective Discussion: Explain the importance of good handwriting and introduce the focus letter of the day, "X".
3. Heart Words Introduction: Introduce and display the 'heart words' (i.e. words frequently used, such as 'the', 'you', 'is', 'of', 'and') on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction (7 minutes)

1. Demonstration:

   • Write the letter "X" on the whiteboard, both in uppercase and lowercase.
   • Show the correct stroke order and placement on lined paper.
   • Provide examples of 'heart words' incorporating the letter "X" (e.g., 'box', 'fox').

2. Practice Together:

   • Students use their finger and air-draw the 'X' following your strokes.
   • Move on to tracing 'X' on paper using pencils.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Handwriting Practice:

   • Distribute lined paper to each student.
   • Set a timer for 5 minutes and have students write uppercase and lowercase "X" multiple times on the first half of the paper.
   • Walk around the classroom to give individual feedback and support.

2. Heart Words Incorporation:

   • On the second half of the paper, have the students write sentences using 'heart words' combined with their practice letter "X". For example, "The fox jumps", "I have a box".
   • Encourage creativity in sentence formation, providing individual help where needed.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

1. Creative Writing:
   • Ask the students to write a short, 2-3 sentence story featuring as many 'X' letters and 'heart words' as possible. For instance, "Max the fox has a big box of toys."
   • Showcase a few examples on the whiteboard and encourage sharing.

Conclusion (3 minutes)

1. Review and Reflect:

   • Gather the students' attention and review the work done.
   • Encourage a couple of students to share their stories with the class.
   • Provide positive feedback and highlight improvements.

2. Cleanup:

   • Have students organise their desks and turn in their papers for a quick check before leaving.

Assessment

• Observe students during practice to gauge their understanding and application of correct handwriting techniques.
• Collect and review worksheets to assess improvement and identify areas needing further practice.
