I want the plan to focus on Hazards vs Disasters. What makes something a hazard and what makes something a disaster. We have only been looking at earthquakes so far and the layers of the earth as well as some primary/secondary impacts and short-term/long-term responses

Lesson structure (25 minutes)

  1. 0–3 min · Hook and retrieval. Display the opening hazard-or-disaster image: two contrasting earthquake scenes, such as an empty rural road with cracks and a collapsed urban building. Ask, “Are both of these disasters?” Students silently choose hazard, disaster or unsure, then share one reason with a partner. Briefly revisit that earthquakes are caused by movement in Earth’s crust and cannot be predicted precisely.

  2. 3–7 min · Clarify key ideas. Use the definition and comparison slides to establish: a hazard is a potentially harmful natural event or process; a disaster occurs when a hazard seriously disrupts a community and causes major impacts beyond its ability to cope. Emphasise that an earthquake in an unpopulated area may be a hazard without becoming a disaster. Students record a one-sentence definition of each on the hazard-versus-disaster worksheet.

  3. 7–14 min · Impact sorting. Display the earthquake impact examples and read the first example aloud: “A building collapses during strong shaking.” In pairs, students classify examples on the worksheet in two ways: direct or indirect impact, and short-term or long-term impact. Include examples such as injury, liquefaction, power cuts, loss of income, damaged roads, disrupted schooling, disease risk, displacement and rebuilding costs. Take answers from several pairs, asking, “What evidence supports your choice?” Accept that some impacts may overlap, provided students justify their reasoning.

  4. 14–20 min · Community case challenge. Present the community comparison scenario: two towns experience an earthquake of similar strength. Town A has strict building codes, emergency supplies, public education, evacuation plans and strong communications. Town B has older buildings, limited emergency services, little planning and many people living in unsafe locations. Groups of four use the worksheet to answer: “Which town is more likely to experience a disaster, and why?” Students must include at least two factors and one direct or indirect impact. Invite two groups to share; highlight that disaster risk is shaped by human decisions and vulnerability, not only by the hazard’s physical strength.

  5. 20–23 min · Evaluate management. Use the management discussion prompt. Students choose one management action—stronger buildings, earthquake drills, emergency kits, land-use planning or public warning systems—and complete: “This could reduce disaster impacts because…” Partners compare responses and identify whether the action mainly reduces immediate impacts, longer-term impacts, or both. Reinforce that earthquakes cannot be stopped or accurately predicted, but communities can prepare and reduce risk.

  6. 23–25 min · Exit check. Students complete the final three questions on the hazard-versus-disaster worksheet: define hazard, define disaster, and explain why an earthquake might be a hazard in one place but a disaster in another. Collect worksheets to identify misconceptions for the next lesson.
