Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and settle. The teacher welcomes students, introduces themselves as the class teacher for today, explains the three class expectations—kind hands, kind words and careful listening—and displays the learning intention using the opening and learning intention slides. Students sit where they can see the modelling area and practise the response signal: hand on heart, eyes looking, voice off.

  2. 5–13 min · Look, notice and infer. The teacher shows a bright, simple garden image on the mystery garden image and discussion slide without naming what is happening.   4. 23–43 min · Create the artwork. The teacher distributes the garden artwork planning sheet and explains that it is a planning support, not a writing test. Students draw “A Surprise in the Garden”, including a setting, a main subject and at least three clues about what is happening. They may draw a surprise animal, object, person or imaginary creature.   5. 43–52 min · Partner inferencing gallery. Students place their work where a partner can see it. Partner A silently studies Partner B’s artwork, then says, “I think ___ is happening because I can see ___.” Partner B responds, “Yes, my clue was ___,” or “I had a different idea: ___.” The teacher models kind, evidence-based responses before the exchange. Students who find speaking difficult may point to a detail, use the sentence frame from a card on the worksheet, or tell the teacher.

  6. 52–60 min · Share and reflect. Invite three or four volunteers to share one artistic choice and one clue. Use the reflection and closing slides to revisit the success criteria. Students complete the oral exit routine: “My picture shows ___; my clue is ___.” Collect worksheets and artwork together, or leave them on tables for the classroom teacher. Finish by acknowledging careful looking, imaginative ideas and respectful listening.
