In this third lesson of Migration Marvels of Kūaka, students use evidence from an informational text to infer how and why kūaka survive long migrations and why their feeding habits matter. Teacher modelling, partner discussion and an inference organiser help students move from “what the text says” to “what the text suggests”.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Reconnect and hook. Teacher displays a striking image of a kūaka in flight using the opening migration image and asks, “How can a bird weighing only a few hundred grams travel thousands of kilometres?” Students silently jot one possible explanation, then share with a partner.

  2. 5–12 min · Introduce the thinking process. Teacher revisits the WALT and models the difference between a fact and an inference: “The text says kūaka build up body fat before migration. I infer that this stored energy helps them fly for long periods.” Teacher highlights the evidence and thinking steps on the inference steps and model example. Students identify the text clue, the teacher’s background knowledge and the resulting inference.

  3. 12–22 min · Read and notice clues. Teacher reads the selected section of the class text about long flights, energy, stopovers and feeding habits, pausing to clarify vocabulary and ask, “What does this detail make you think?” Students follow the text, underline or note useful clues, and turn-and-talk after each pause. Use the guided reading questions to maintain focus.

  4. 22–32 min · Teacher modelling. Teacher completes one row of the kūaka inference organiser on the board. Model the sequence: focus question, evidence copied or paraphrased, background knowledge, inference, and explanation. Think aloud about choosing strong evidence rather than an interesting but unrelated detail. Students help improve a weak inference by adding a precise reference to the text.

  5. 32–47 min · Partner inquiry. Teacher pairs students and assigns one question, such as “How do kūaka prepare for long flights?” or “Why are feeding places important?” Teacher distributes the kūaka inference organiser and provides the inference planning mat as a visual support for moving from evidence to inference to explanation. Students reread the relevant section, record at least two pieces of evidence, develop an inference, and rehearse their explanation with their partner. Partners challenge one another with, “Which words in the text helped you think that?”

  6. 47–55 min · Share and compare. Teacher invites selected pairs to present an inference and evidence, recording different ideas under “Text clue”, “What we think” and “Why it makes sense” on the sharing and comparison prompts. Students listen for whether the evidence genuinely supports the inference and offer a respectful response: “I agree because…” or “I wonder if…”

  7. 55–60 min · Exit reflection. Teacher asks students to complete the final box on the worksheet: “One inference I can now make about kūaka is… My evidence is…” Students hand in their organisers and briefly rate their confidence from 1–3.
