Teaching Instructions

I want an introduction lesson to mountains that will give learners the vocabulary to be able to discuss and label the parts of a volcano. This lesson will be the scaffolding for a lesson on how they are formed etc. I have limited resources for this. I would love this to end with an art task where they get to draw their own volcanos and label them themselves. I like to follow the I do, we do, you do structure of a lesson.

Overview

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and connect. Teacher displays a striking photograph of a volcano using the volcano hook slide and asks, “What clues tell us this is a mountain, and what might be happening inside it?” Students silently observe, share one idea with a partner, then contribute words or questions. Introduce the learning intentions and explain that today’s diagrams will help with a later lesson about how volcanoes form.

  2. 5–15 min · I do: model the vocabulary. Teacher uses the volcano parts teaching slides and the Landforms Reference Poster to distinguish a mountain from a volcano, then models a large cross-section diagram. Point to and explain each term: volcanic cone (the mountain-shaped sides), crater (the bowl-shaped opening at the top), vent (the passage through which magma travels), magma chamber (an underground space where magma collects), lava (magma that reaches Earth’s surface), and ash cloud (tiny pieces of rock and minerals carried into the air). Students listen, repeat the words, and use hand actions or pointing to show where each part is located.

  3. 15–23 min · We do: build meaning together. Teacher reveals an incomplete diagram on the guided labelling slides and invites students to help place each label. Ask, “Which word belongs underground?”, “What is the difference between magma and lava?” and “Where would ash be found?” Students work in groups of three, using talk such as “I think ___ because ___”, then hold up or point to the correct area on their copy of the volcano vocabulary and labelling sheet.   6. 40–45 min · Share and check. Teacher displays the plenary and self-check slide and asks students to show their diagram to a partner. Students explain three labels using the frame, “My ___ is ___. It is found ___.” Partners check: all six labels included, lines point accurately, and at least three words are used aloud. Finish with a quick whole-class response: “What is one new word you can now use?”
